Colorado Rockies at St. Louis Cardinals

ST. LOUIS (Interstat) -- The Colorado Rockies and St. Louis Cardinals finish their three-game series Sunday at Busch Stadium, with Colorado looking for a second straight win after an 8-6 victory Saturday.

Colorado entered the matchup with a 46-71 record, while St. Louis is 58-59, one game under .500. The forecast calls for clear skies and 90 degrees at game time.

Rockies left fielder Jake McCarthy has been the main offensive spark. In Saturday’s win, McCarthy went 4 for 5 with two home runs and three RBIs. He has 11 hits in his past four games. Kyle Freeland also was effective Saturday, allowing one earned run over 4 1/3 innings, and Cole Carrigg added two hits and two RBIs.

St. Louis will counter with catcher Iván Herrera, who has been productive in this series. Herrera went 3 for 5 with an RBI in Saturday’s loss and homered in Friday’s 3-2 win. He is 4 for 9 in the two games at Busch Stadium with two RBIs.

The Cardinals also got strong work Saturday from José Fermín, who was 2 for 2 with two RBIs, and Jordan Walker, who hit a home run. St. Louis won Friday’s series opener 3-2, but Colorado bounced back Saturday to square the series and set up Sunday’s rubber game.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-3 Cardinals win, and its ELO system gives St. Louis a 66.40 percent probability to win. St. Louis is a minus-1.5 run-line favorite, with the over/under set at 9.

After Sunday, Colorado travels to Arizona to begin a three-game series Monday. St. Louis will open a homestand Monday against Philadelphia.

Sunday’s game also offers both teams a chance to build momentum. The Rockies have shown offensive upside but have struggled with consistency. The Cardinals remain near .500 and will be looking to avoid dropping two of three at home to one of baseball’s worst teams.

With clear, hot weather and two lineups capable of scoring, the final game of the series could turn on the starting pitching and late bullpen matchups. Colorado will lean on McCarthy’s hot bat; St. Louis will look for Herrera to spark the middle of the order. The projections favor the Cardinals, but the Rockies have already shown once this weekend they can win at Busch Stadium.
