San Diego Padres at Arizona Diamondbacks

PHOENIX (Interstat) — The San Diego Padres and Arizona Diamondbacks will wrap up their four-game series Thursday at Chase Field, with the NL West rivals separated by two games in the standings.

Arizona (61-54) leads the series 2-1 after Wednesday’s 10-4 win. Mitch Bratt was the story, throwing seven innings of one-hit ball with nine strikeouts. Ildemaro Vargas drove in four runs and Tim Tawa homered and added two RBIs. The Diamondbacks also won Monday’s opener 5-1, while San Diego answered with a 9-4 victory Tuesday.

San Diego (59-56) will start right-hander Walker Buehler (6-5). The Padres also list Kohl Drake (0-0) as a probable pitcher. Buehler will need length against a Diamondbacks lineup that has scored 19 runs in the first three games of this series.

One Padres reliever to watch is left-hander Kyle Hart, who has been sharp out of the bullpen. Hart worked 2 2/3 scoreless innings Wednesday against Arizona, allowing two hits and striking out three. He has not allowed an earned run in seven of his past eight appearances, including three scoreless outings in his last four games.

Arizona had not announced its probable starter for Thursday.

The game is significant beyond this series. The Diamondbacks entered with a 61-54 record, while the Padres were 59-56. A Diamondbacks win would give them a three-game cushion over San Diego and a series victory; a Padres win would even the series and pull them within one game in the loss column.

San Diego’s offense showed power in Tuesday’s win but was held down Wednesday except for a few bright spots. In that 10-4 loss, Gage Workman drove in three runs with a 1-for-1 day, and Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a solo homer. The Padres will try to carry that into Thursday against Arizona’s pitching staff.

Interstat’s game simulator projects an 8-6 Padres win, but its ELO system gives Arizona a 51.3 percent probability of winning. The betting market sees it as a close game, with San Diego installed as a minus-1.5 run-line favorite. The over/under is set at 8.5.

Both teams enter the stretch run with important scheduling ahead. After Thursday, the Padres return home to face Houston, while the Diamondbacks stay home to host the Los Angeles Dodgers. With the division race tight, Thursday’s result could set the tone for the next homestands.

First pitch is scheduled for the evening at Chase Field.
