Pittsburgh Pirates at Milwaukee Brewers
MILWAUKEE (Interstat) — The Milwaukee Brewers look to close out a four-game series win Thursday afternoon at American Family Field, where they host the Pittsburgh Pirates in the finale of their set.
The Brewers enter at 71-43, the Pirates at 57-59. Milwaukee has won the first two games of this series (Interstat) — both by 4-2 scores (Interstat) — after Pittsburgh took Monday’s opener 4-3. The Pirates, though, have won six of nine season meetings between the teams.
Right-hander Braxton Ashcraft (11-4) is Pittsburgh’s probable starter, with right-hander Dustin May (5-7) also listed as a probable option. Ashcraft will look to stabilize a Pirates rotation that has struggled lately. The forecast calls for rain and 79 degrees at first pitch.
One pitcher to watch for Pittsburgh is right-hander Paul Skenes, though he is not scheduled to start Thursday after taking the loss Wednesday. Skenes allowed three earned runs on two hits over five innings, striking out six, as Pittsburgh fell 4-2. He has lost his last three decisions, and Wednesday marked his sixth consecutive start allowing at least two earned runs. Still, Skenes has shown swing-and-miss stuff, and his outing kept the Pirates within reach. Catcher Endy Rodríguez provided the offense with a two-run homer.
Milwaukee counter with a deep and confident bullpen. Left-hander Kyle Harrison, a player to watch for the Brewers, turned in a dominant start Wednesday, allowing one hit and no earned runs over five innings while striking out 10. Trevor Megill and Abner Uribe each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the win. The Brewers have leaned on that relief trio in tight games, and another low-scoring matchup could give them chances to protect a lead late.
Milwaukee’s offense has been consistent in this series, scoring four in each of the last two games. The Brewers also have shown power and patience throughout the season, and they enter as the clear favorite in this matchup.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, the projected final score is Milwaukee 6, Pittsburgh 4. Interstat’s ELO system gives the Brewers a 64.10 percent probability to win. Milwaukee is a -1.5 run-line favorite, and the over/under is set at 7.5.
A win would give Milwaukee the series, three games to one, and continue its strong home play. Pittsburgh, meanwhile, is trying to avoid a third consecutive loss and a second straight series defeat.
The teams are scheduled to head in different directions after this one. Pittsburgh hosts the New York Mets beginning Friday, while Milwaukee opens a home series against Minnesota the same day. First, they must play through the wet forecast in Milwaukee.
