Mets rout Guardians 13‑6 with 18-hit attack
CLEVELAND (Interstat) — Marcus Semien delivered three hits, scored twice and drove in two runs, and the New York Mets outslugged the Cleveland Guardians 13-6 on Thursday at Progressive Field.
Semien homered in the second inning and added a double and a single, while Luis Torrens drove in three runs with a homer and a single. Francisco Lindor hit a three-run homer in the seventh inning that broke open a one-run game. Carson Benge collected three hits and drove in a run. The Mets finished with 18 hits and put the game away with a four-run eighth inning.
New York jumped ahead with a three-run second. Semien led off with his 13th homer of the season, a solo shot to left-center. Eric Wagaman singled and scored when Torrens hit his fourth homer of the year to right field. The Mets extended the lead in the third. Bo Bichette walked, moved to second on Luis Robert Jr.’s force out, and scored on Benge’s triple to center. Semien followed with a sacrifice fly to left that plated Benge and made it 5-2.
Cleveland had taken an early 2-0 lead in the first. Chase DeLauter and José Ramírez walked, Nathaniel Lowe singled to load the bases, and Angel Martínez singled to center to score both DeLauter and Ramírez. The Guardians threatened for more but Mets starter Nolan McLean worked out of further trouble.
McLean settled in after the first. He allowed two runs and scattered hits over five innings, striking out seven. He left with a 6-5 lead after the Mets manufactured a run in the fifth. Francisco Alvarez walked, Semien doubled, and Jared Young singled to left to score Alvarez and put the Mets up 6-2.
The Guardians answered in the bottom of the fifth. DeLauter and Ramírez singled, and Lowe homered to right, his 13th of the season, tying the game at 6-6 on the scoreboard, though the Mets had actually taken a 6-5 lead the previous half-inning. That is not quite right — the Mets scored in the top of the fifth to go up 6-2, then Cleveland’s three-run homer made it 6-5. So after five innings, the Mets led 6-5.
Cleveland kept it close until the seventh. With one out, Semien singled, but Jared Young hit into a force out at second. Torrens singled Young to third, and after an A.J. Ewing bunt groundout put runners at second and third, Lindor launched a fly ball over the right-field wall for his 10th homer of the season. The three-run shot gave the Mets a 9-5 lead.
The Mets put the game out of reach in the eighth. Robert Jr. singled, Benge singled, and Francisco Alvarez doubled to left to score Robert Jr. Semien walked, and Young walked with the bases loaded to force in Benge. Torrens walked to force in Alvarez. After a strikeout, Bichette singled to left to score Semien and give the Mets a 13-5 lead.
Cleveland scored a final run in the ninth when DeLauter singled home Angel Genao. Lowe walked with two outs but Angel Martínez popped out to end the game.
The Mets’ offense was balanced up and down the lineup. Semien finished 3 for 4 with a homer, two RBIs and two runs. Torrens went 2 for 4 with a homer, three RBIs and two runs. Lindor was 2 for 6 with three RBIs and a run. Benge was 3 for 6 with an RBI and two runs. Robert Jr. had two hits and scored twice. Jared Young, batting as a pinch hitter in the fifth, went 1 for 2 with two RBIs.
For Cleveland, Lowe had two hits, homered and drove in three. Martínez had two hits and two RBIs. DeLauter and Petey Halpin each had two hits.
McLean earned the win to improve to 8-6 on the season. He pitched the first five innings, allowing five runs on six hits. The Mets bullpen held Cleveland to one run over the final four innings. Xzavion Curry pitched two scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out one. Nate Lavender and Kodai Senga each pitched a perfect inning with two strikeouts.
Cleveland starter Foster Griffin took the loss and fell to 12-4. Austin Hedges pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the Guardians with one strikeout.
The attendance was 26,764, and the game lasted 3 hours, 2 minutes.
New York improved to 50-66 with the victory, while Cleveland dropped to 57-59. The Mets have won three straight against Cleveland, including a 6-5 victory in 10 innings on Wednesday and a 6-2 win on Tuesday. The Mets open a three-game series at Pittsburgh on Friday. Cleveland begins a four-game series at Chicago against the White Sox on Friday.
