O’Neill, Taveras homers power Orioles past Angels 5‑2

BALTIMORE (Interstat) — Trevor Rogers pitched six innings of three-hit ball and Tyler O’Neill and Coby Mayo hit consecutive home runs in the fourth inning as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Los Angeles Angels 5-2 on Wednesday night at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

Rogers allowed two earned runs and struck out nine while walking none, improving to 7-7 on the season. Andrew Kittredge worked a scoreless ninth inning for his fifth save. The Orioles won for the second straight night over the Angels and improved to 56-58, while the Angels dropped to 43-71.

Baltimore broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning against Angels starter Reid Detmers. Gunnar Henderson walked with one out, and Tyler O’Neill followed by launching a 2-run homer to left-center field for his ninth home run of the season. Coby Mayo then made it 3-0 with a solo shot to left-center, his 15th homer. Christian Encarnacion-Strand doubled afterward, but Detmers escaped further damage.

Detmers took the loss, allowing three earned runs on four hits over four innings. He struck out five and walked two. The left-hander fell to 3-8 on the season.

The Angels got on the board in the sixth inning against Rogers when Jose Siri led off with a home run to left-center, his sixth of the year. Rogers retired the next three batters, including strikeouts of Zach Neto and Mike Trout, to complete his outing.

Baltimore’s bullpen took over from there. Yennier Cano pitched a scoreless seventh inning with two strikeouts. Rico Garcia recorded one out in the eighth before giving way to Kittredge, who finished the game.

The Angels pulled within one run in the seventh inning. Nolan Schanuel reached on a single that was deflected by first baseman Pete Alonso. After Vaughn Grissom lined out, Moises Ballesteros grounded out but advanced Schanuel to third. Wade Meckler then singled to left field to score Schanuel and cut the deficit to 3-2. Josh Lowe popped out to end the inning.

Baltimore answered in the bottom of the eighth against Angels reliever Shaun Anderson. Dylan Beavers struck out to start the inning, and Pete Alonso struck out on a foul tip. Gunnar Henderson was then hit by a pitch, and Leody Taveras, batting as a pinch hitter, drove a 2-run homer to right-center field to give the Orioles a 5-2 lead. Taveras finished 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Coby Mayo struck out to end the inning.

Anderson pitched two innings in relief for the Angels, allowing one hit and no earned runs while striking out three. Ben Joyce also worked a scoreless inning with one strikeout.

The Angels threatened little after their seventh-inning run. In the eighth, Jose Siri struck out on a foul tip, Adam Frazier lined out, and Zach Neto struck out swinging. In the ninth, Kittredge retired Mike Trout on a sharp lineout, Nolan Schanuel on a flyout, and Vaughn Grissom on a flyout to right field to seal the game.

Baltimore’s offense collected six hits. Mayo led the way with two hits, including his home run. Henderson singled in the first inning and walked in the fourth before scoring on O’Neill’s homer. O’Neill went 1-for-3 with the home run and two RBIs. Taveras delivered the key pinch-hit homer in the eighth.

The Angels managed four hits. Travis d’Arnaud singled in the second inning, Schanuel singled in the seventh, Meckler singled in the seventh, and Siri homered in the sixth. The Angels struck out 13 times as a team, with Neto striking out three times and Trout striking out three times.

The game lasted 2 hours and 27 minutes before an announced crowd of 16,977.

Baltimore took advantage of two walks and a hit batter. Detmers walked Henderson in the fourth, and Anderson walked Jackson Holliday in the seventh before Holliday was caught stealing second to end the inning. Henderson was hit by a pitch in the eighth and scored on Taveras’ homer.

Defensively, the Orioles turned three groundouts to second baseman Jackson Holliday and first baseman Pete Alonso. The Angels turned a double play when Holliday was caught stealing second base, with catcher Tyler Heineman throwing to second baseman Adam Frazier.

The Angels had a chance in the second inning when d’Arnaud singled with two outs, but Josh Lowe flew out to center field. In the third inning, Neto lined out to third baseman Christian Encarnacion-Strand. In the fifth, the Angels went down in order, with Ballesteros popping out, d’Arnaud striking out, and Lowe striking out.

Rogers retired the side in order in the first, second, third, and fifth innings. He faced the minimum through three innings before the Angels’ sixth-inning homer. He struck out five of the first nine batters he faced.

The Orioles took the lead in the fourth after Henderson’s walk. O’Neill’s homer came on a 1-1 pitch from Detmers, and Mayo followed with a homer on the next pitch from Detmers. Encarnacion-Strand doubled, but Detmers struck out Jackson Holliday and got Jeremiah Jackson to ground out.

Baltimore added its final runs in the eighth after Henderson was hit by Anderson’s pitch. Taveras, who entered as a pinch hitter for Dylan Beavers, hit a line-drive homer to right-center. It was his sixth home run of the season.

The Angels’ bullpen kept the game close after Detmers exited. Joyce worked a scoreless sixth inning, striking out Carlos Narvaez and Christian Franklin and getting Pete Alonso to strike out swinging. Anderson worked the seventh and eighth, allowing only the Taveras homer.

O’Neill’s home run was his ninth of the season. Mayo’s was his 15th. Siri’s was his sixth. The Orioles hit three home runs in the game, while the Angels hit one.
