Tampa Bay Rays at Colorado Rockies
DENVER (Interstat) — The Tampa Bay Rays look to bounce back Monday night when they open a three-game series against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.
Tampa Bay (65-46) dropped Sunday’s series finale 9-1 to the Chicago White Sox. Right-hander Griffin Jax took the loss despite allowing one earned run over five innings while striking out eight. Ben Williamson homered for the Rays, and reliever Steven Matz pitched a scoreless inning. Over his past five starts, Jax has struck out 32 in 26 2/3 innings, including a 10-strikeout outing July 28 against Texas and a win at Toronto on July 22.
Colorado (45-67) enters with a three-game winning streak after beating Kansas City 8-1 on Sunday. Left-hander Kyle Freeland threw a complete game, allowing one run on five hits while striking out eight. Jake McCarthy homered and drove in three runs, and Brett Sullivan added two hits and two RBIs. Freeland had allowed at least four earned runs in each of his previous three starts before his bounce-back effort.
The forecast calls for 93 degrees and clouds at game time, conditions that could favor hitters in Denver’s thin air. The high-scoring outlook is reflected in the over/under of 11.5 runs. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-4 Tampa Bay win, and Interstat’s ELO system gives the Rays a 64.7 percent probability of victory. Tampa Bay is a 1 1/2-run favorite.
The Rays have won six of their last 10 games, while the Rockies have shown recent life despite a difficult season. Both starting pitchers were in the spotlight Sunday, and both could be key again as the series continues Tuesday and Wednesday at Coors Field. After the three-game set, Tampa Bay travels to Seattle, while Colorado heads to St. Louis.
