Los Angeles Dodgers at Chicago Cubs
CHICAGO (Interstat) — The Los Angeles Dodgers open a three-game series Monday at Wrigley Field against the Chicago Cubs, with first pitch set for 70 degrees and cloudy skies.
Los Angeles enters at 69-43, while Chicago is 63-49. Both teams are coming off losses Sunday: The Dodgers fell 8-4 at Boston, and the Cubs dropped a 2-1 decision to the New York Yankees.
The Dodgers were swept in three games at Fenway Park, but they had won four of their previous five. The Cubs took two of three from the Yankees at Wrigley after losing Friday’s opener.
These teams last met in late April in Los Angeles, with the Dodgers taking two of three. The Cubs won the opener 6-4, then the Dodgers rolled to 12-4 and 6-0 victories.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-6 Dodgers win, and its ELO system gives Los Angeles a 54.2 percent probability of victory. The Dodgers are listed as 1.5-run favorites, with an over/under of 8.5.
One player to watch for the Dodgers is left-hander Jack Dreyer. In his past 10 relief appearances, Dreyer has allowed two earned runs over 9 1/3 innings with 10 strikeouts. He worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings against Boston on Sunday and has allowed one hit or fewer in eight of his last 10 outings. Overall, he has been a steady bullpen option for a Dodgers pitching staff that has dealt with inconsistency during the summer.
For the Cubs, right-hander Colin Rea is another key figure. Rea allowed two earned runs over six innings with seven strikeouts in Sunday’s loss to New York, extending his streak of quality length. In each of his past five starts, Rea has completed at least five innings. He has shown the ability to miss bats, including a seven-strikeout outing Sunday and six strikeouts in a July 17 start against Minnesota. While Rea is not scheduled to start Monday, his recent performances give the Cubs confidence in their rotation depth.
The Dodgers will try to avoid a fourth consecutive loss, while the Cubs hope to build on a strong stretch that saw them win six of nine before Sunday.
Andy Pages drove in three runs in Sunday’s loss for the Dodgers and remains a productive bat in the middle of their lineup.
The series continues Tuesday and Wednesday at Wrigley Field before the Dodgers travel to Arizona and the Cubs host Toronto on Thursday. Chicago then heads to Kansas City for a three-game weekend series, while Los Angeles begins a weekend set in Arizona.
