Houston Astros defeat Texas Rangers 7‑3 with four-run seventh

HOUSTON (Interstat) — Yordan Alvarez collected four hits and Jeremy Pena homered as the Houston Astros broke open a tie game with four runs in the seventh inning and beat the Texas Rangers 7-3 on Sunday afternoon at Daikin Park.

Alvarez went 4 for 5 with two RBIs and scored once, including three doubles. Pena finished 2 for 4 with a two-run homer for the Astros, who swept the three-game series and improved to 58-55. Texas fell to 55-57 and lost its fifth consecutive game.

Attendance was 33,955 and the game took 2:56.

Houston pushed across the first run in the third inning. Alvarez singled to lead off, moved to third on a fly out, and scored on Jose Altuve’s ground-ball single to third base. The Astros extended the lead in the fourth when Pena drove a line-drive home run to left field with Cam Smith aboard, making it 3-0.

The Rangers answered in the fifth. Brandon Nimmo walked, Jake Burger singled, and Evan Carter singled to right field to score Nimmo. Carter was thrown out trying to reach second on the play, but Ezequiel Duran followed with an RBI single to left, scoring Burger and trimming the deficit to 3-2.

Houston starter Peter Lambert stabilized the game after that. Lambert allowed two earned runs on three hits over 5 2/3 innings and struck out eight. He exited with the Astros still holding a 3-2 lead, and the Houston bullpen took over from there.

Texas tied it in the top of the seventh when Nimmo hit his 11th home run of the season to right field. The Rangers then put another runner on base with a Burger single, but Houston escaped further damage when Steven Okert induced a sacrifice bunt, a strikeout and a called strike three to keep the game level at 3-3.

The bottom of the seventh proved decisive. Christian Walker doubled to left, and Taylor Trammell was hit by a pitch. Altuve grounded into a force out that erased Walker at third, leaving runners at first and second. Smith then singled to left to score Trammell and put Houston ahead 4-3. Nick Allen walked to load the bases, and LaMonte Wade Jr. singled to first base, scoring Altuve. After Pena struck out, Alvarez doubled to right field, scoring Smith and Allen and sending Wade to third. The double gave Houston a 7-3 lead and ended the scoring.

Bryan Abreu earned the win after throwing 2/3 of a scoreless inning with two strikeouts. AJ Blubaugh notched his first save of the season, allowing one hit over 1 1/3 scoreless innings. Tyler Alexander took the loss for Texas.

Texas starter Kumar Rocker worked 5 1/3 innings and allowed three runs on 10 hits while striking out five. Ben Peoples threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings for the Rangers, and Robby Ahlstrom recorded 2/3 of an inning without allowing a run.

Nimmo led Texas at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a home run and an RBI. Jake Burger added two hits, and Evan Carter and Ezequiel Duran each drove in a run for the Rangers.

Houston’s offense accumulated 15 hits, while Texas managed six. The Astros got multi-hit efforts from Alvarez, Pena, Smith and Altuve. Walker doubled and scored in the seventh, and Wade delivered a pinch-hit single in his only plate appearance.

The Rangers return home Monday to open a series against San Francisco. Houston hosts Toronto in a four-game series beginning Monday night.
