Dingler hits grand slam, Tigers rout Athletics 13‑1

WEST SACRAMENTO (Interstat) — Dillon Dingler hit a grand slam in a seven-run eighth inning and the Detroit Tigers beat the Athletics 13-1 on Friday night at Sutter Health Park.

The Tigers, who had lost four of their previous five games, snapped out of their funk with a 14-hit attack while the Athletics managed only three hits before a crowd of 8,926. The game lasted 2 hours, 41 minutes.

Detroit improved to 52-58 with the victory. The Athletics fell to 45-65.

The Athletics grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Jacob Wilson walked and Jonah Heim followed with a line-drive double to center field that was deflected by left fielder Riley Greene, scoring Wilson. Tyler Soderstrom grounded out to move Heim to third, but Tommy White flied out to end the inning.

Detroit tied it in the third when Kevin McGonigle hit his 10th home run of the season, a fly ball to center field. The Tigers took the lead in the fourth. Spencer Torkelson walked, Max Clark singled, and after Javier Báez lined out, Ben Malgeri walked to load the bases. McGonigle then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Torkelson to make it 2-1.

Neither team scored again until the eighth, when the game broke open.

Eduardo Valencia, pinch-hitting for Colt Keith, doubled to left field to start the inning. Zach McKinstry, who had entered as a pinch-runner, moved to third on Torkelson’s single to left. Max Clark doubled to left, scoring McKinstry and sending Torkelson to third. Báez singled to right, plating Torkelson and putting Clark at third. Ben Malgeri reached on a fielder’s choice when third baseman Tommy White’s throw to the plate was errant, allowing Clark to score and Báez to advance to second. McGonigle walked to load the bases. Gleyber Torres lined out to shortstop, and then Dingler launched a grand slam to center field, his 23rd home run of the season, scoring Báez, Malgeri, and McGonigle to make it 9-1.

The Tigers tacked on four more in the ninth. Torkelson singled to left, Clark doubled to left, and Báez singled to center, scoring both runners. Malgeri followed with a two-run homer to left, his first of the season, extending the lead to 13-1.

McGonigle finished 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBIs, and a sacrifice fly. Báez went 3-for-5 with three RBIs. Torkelson was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Malgeri drove in three runs on a hit and a sacrifice fly. Clark had two doubles, two runs scored, and an RBI. Dingler drove in four runs on his grand slam.

The Athletics’ offense was limited to the first-inning run. Jonah Heim had the only extra-base hit for the home team, and Jacob Wilson had one of its three hits. Henry Bolte singled in the fourth, and Wilson singled in the fifth.

Detroit starter Tyler Holton allowed one run on two hits over two innings, striking out one. Ty Madden pitched three scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits and striking out two, and was credited with the win, improving to 1-0. Drew Sommers followed with two scoreless innings, striking out three.

Athletics starter Jeffrey Springs took the loss, falling to 3-11. The bullpen combination of Springs and his successors could not contain the Detroit lineup once the eighth inning arrived.

The victory was the Tigers’ third straight over the Athletics this season. Detroit had swept a three-game series at home against the Athletics from July 7-9, winning 6-2, 6-1, and 4-1. The teams will play the second game of this series Saturday at Sutter Health Park.

The Athletics have now lost four of their last five games. Boston beat them 5-4 on Thursday, and the Red Sox took three of four in the previous series. Detroit, meanwhile, had lost four of five before Friday, including three straight at home against Baltimore earlier in the week.

The Tigers’ offensive breakout was their most productive game since a 14-0 win over Baltimore on Tuesday. Friday’s 13 runs were the second-highest single-game total of the season for Detroit.

The Athletics, who have struggled at home all season, fell to 22-30 at Sutter Health Park. The Tigers improved to 26-29 on the road.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Detroit 5, Athletics 4. Interstat’s ELO system gave Detroit a 57.60 percent probability to win. The Tigers were installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The combined score of 14 runs went under the over/under line of 11.
