Red Sox rally past Dodgers, powered by Bello and Rafaela

LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — The Boston Red Sox overcame a one-run deficit with a five-run seventh inning and defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-4 on Friday night at Dodger Stadium.

Boston improved to 58-51 with the victory, while the Dodgers fell to 69-41 before an announced crowd of 47,903. The game lasted 2 hours, 53 minutes.

The Red Sox struck first in the second inning. Caleb Durbin walked, advanced on a single by Jarren Duran, and scored on Duran’s ground-ball single to center field. Boston added two more runs in the third on an unusual sequence. After Nick Sogard singled and Ceddanne Rafaela singled, Willson Contreras was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Masataka Yoshida then reached on a fielding error by first baseman Freddie Freeman, allowing Sogard and Rafaela to score and giving Boston a 3-0 lead.

Dodgers starter Will Klein, who pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief as part of an opener arrangement, allowed those three runs. Cole Irvin later took over and held Boston scoreless until the seventh, but the Dodgers had already taken the lead by then.

Los Angeles got a run in the fourth inning when Shohei Ohtani doubled and scored on Freddie Freeman’s single. The Dodgers surged ahead in the fifth. Kyle Tucker walked, Enrique Hernández singled, and Eliezer Alfonzo singled to score Tucker. Hernández was thrown out at second on the play, but Ohtani followed with a two-run home run to right field, his 24th of the season, giving the Dodgers a 4-3 lead.

Andruw Monasterio then doubled to left field, clearing the bases and plating Abreu, Yoshida and Durbin to make it 8-4. Duran grounded out but drove in Monasterio for Boston’s final run of the inning.

The Red Sox added a ninth run in the top of the ninth. Yoshida singled and Durbin doubled, putting runners at second and third. After Monasterio grounded out, Evan Phillips intentionally walked Duran to load the bases. Carlos Narváez then lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring pinch runner Jahmai Jones.

The Dodgers threatened in the sixth and eighth innings but could not cut into the lead. In the sixth, Freeman and Mookie Betts singled to put two runners on, but Bello retired the next three hitters, including an intentional walk to Max Muncy before a groundout ended the inning. In the eighth, Freeman and Kyle Tucker singled with two outs, but Muncy grounded out to Bello to end the threat.

Irvin took the loss for the Dodgers, his first against no decisions. He allowed five runs on six hits and three walks over 3 2/3 innings in relief, exiting after the seventh-inning rally.
