Arizona Diamondbacks at Cleveland Guardians
CLEVELAND (Interstat) — Eduardo Rodriguez and Joey Cantillo will take the mound Friday night as the Arizona Diamondbacks visit the Cleveland Guardians for the opener of a three-game series at Progressive Field.
First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. EDT under clear skies with a temperature of 77 degrees.
Rodriguez (7-6, 3.78 ERA) will start for Arizona (57-52). The left-hander is coming off his best outing of the season, a three-hit shutout over eight innings Wednesday in a 3-0 victory at Pittsburgh. He struck out two and did not walk a batter. In his previous three starts, Rodriguez allowed two earned runs or fewer in two of them, though he was tagged for five runs in 2 2/3 innings July 19 against St. Louis. He has won four of his past five decisions.
Cantillo (4-5, 4.50 ERA) gets the ball for Cleveland (56-54). The lefty scattered four hits over four scoreless innings Wednesday at Cincinnati, striking out eight in a 6-1 win. That performance came after a rough outing July 24 at Tampa Bay, when he allowed five runs on eight hits in 3 2/3 innings. Cantillo has been erratic but effective at times, posting a 1.80 ERA in two July starts (10 innings, two earned runs) while struggling in his other two outings (11 earned runs in 8 2/3 innings).
The Diamondbacks enter having won three of their past four, including Wednesday’s shutout behind Rodriguez. Arizona also took two of three from the Pirates and split a six-game road trip that began with a series loss at Washington. Catcher Gabriel Moreno homered and drove in two runs in the series finale at Pittsburgh.
The Guardians have won three of their past four, including Wednesday’s victory at Cincinnati. First baseman Kyle Manzardo homered and drove in two runs in that game. Cleveland had lost four of five before the brief winning surge.
Arizona is 25-27 on the road; Cleveland is 28-25 at home.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-4 Arizona victory. Cleveland is a minus-1.5 run favorite, and the over/under is 8½.
The series continues Saturday and Sunday before Arizona returns home to face San Diego on Monday. Cleveland hosts the New York Mets on Tuesday.
