Ray pitches Giants past Padres 4‑1 behind Susac’s homer

SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — Robbie Ray allowed one earned run over six innings, Daniel Susac hit a three-run homer and the San Francisco Giants beat the San Diego Padres 4-1 on Thursday night at PETCO Park.

The Giants struck in the first inning. Heliot Ramos walked, advanced to third on Bryce Eldridge’s single and scored on Rafael Devers’ sacrifice fly to right field. One inning later, San Francisco doubled its lead. Willy Adames singled to center, and Susac followed with a drive over the left-field wall for his third homer of the season, scoring Adames and putting the Giants up 3-0.

San Diego got one run back in the bottom of the second. Ty France was hit by a pitch, Jackson Merrill singled and Luis Campusano grounded into a double play, but France moved to third on the exchange. Xander Bogaerts then singled to center, scoring France and trimming the Giants’ lead to 3-1.

Ray kept the Padres from doing further damage. The left-hander worked around trouble in the third when Luis Rengifo drew a walk, but Manny Machado popped out to end the inning. In the fourth, Ray struck out Ty France and Luis Campusano to set down the side. The Padres threatened again in the sixth when Rengifo doubled with two outs, but Ray struck out Machado and France to finish his outing. Ray improved to 10-6, allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out six and walking one in 6.0 innings.

The Giants added an insurance run in the fifth. Devers opened the inning with a single, and Jung Hoo Lee walked. After Adames lined out, Susac lifted a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Devers from third and stretching the lead to 4-1.

Devers finished 3 for 4 with one RBI and one run scored. He singled in his first three at-bats and was the steady presence at the top of the Giants lineup behind Luis Arraez, Heliot Ramos and Eldridge. Susac went 1 for 3 with the homer and three RBIs, accounting for most of the Giants’ offense. San Francisco collected 11 hits total, including two-hit contributions from multiple spots in the order. The Giants also used two sacrifice flies in the game.

San Diego’s bullpen kept the game within reach after starter JP Sears was removed. Sears fell to 3-4 after allowing three earned runs on seven hits and two strikeouts over 3.2 innings. Wandy Peralta allowed one earned run in 0.2 innings of relief. Randy Vásquez provided the longest relief outing for the Padres, throwing 4.2 scoreless innings and allowing three hits while striking out one. Vásquez’s work kept San Diego within two runs entering the late innings, but the Padres could not find another scoring chance.

San Diego managed six hits in the game. Rengifo went 2 for 3 with a double and a walk, and Merrill had two hits out of the leadoff spot. Bogaerts drove in the only run for the Padres. San Diego put runners on base in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, but the Giants bullpen responded each time. Dylan Smith worked the seventh and allowed one hit while striking out two. Caleb Kilian followed with a scoreless eighth, striking out one. Erik Miller earned his fourth save of the season by pitching the ninth, allowing one hit and striking out one. Miller ended the game by getting Bogaerts to fly out to center with a runner on first.

The Giants improved to 47-63 with the victory. The Padres fell to 55-54. Attendance was announced at 42,758, and the game lasted 2 hours, 53 minutes.

The teams will continue the series Friday night at PETCO Park, with the next three games also scheduled in San Diego before the Giants move on to Texas.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of San Diego 5, San Francisco 4, and Interstat’s ELO system gave the Padres a 58.80 percent probability to win. San Diego had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5. The over-under was set at 8.5, and the teams’ combined five runs finished below that number.
