Giants Rout Brewers 16‑3 Behind Susac’s Two Home Runs

SAN FRANCISCO (Interstat) — Daniel Susac hit two home runs and drove in four runs, and Logan Webb pitched six solid innings as the San Francisco Giants routed the Milwaukee Brewers 16-3 on Wednesday afternoon at Oracle Park.

The Giants, who had lost the series opener 8-2 the previous day, erupted for seven runs in the sixth inning to break open a close game and cruised to their second win in the three-game series. San Francisco improved to 46-62, while Milwaukee fell to 67-41.

Attendance was 35,399, and the game lasted 3 hours, 3 minutes.

Milwaukee struck first in the third inning. David Hamilton singled and Cooper Pratt followed with a single, putting runners at the corners. Brice Turang grounded into a force out that scored Hamilton, giving the Brewers a 1-0 lead. But the advantage was short-lived.

San Francisco had already taken control in the second inning. With one out, Jung Hoo Lee reached on a fielding error by center fielder Garrett Mitchell. Willy Adames walked, and Susac crushed a 1-0 pitch over the center-field wall for a three-run homer, his first of the game. The Giants led 3-1.

The Brewers cut the deficit to 3-2 in the fourth. Jake Bauers tripled to right field and came home on a groundout by Mitchell. Milwaukee threatened to tie the game later in the inning, but Christian Yelich walked and was left stranded.

Webb settled in after that. The right-hander allowed two earned runs on five hits over six innings, striking out four and walking two. He improved to 6-7 on the season.

The game turned decisively in the bottom of the sixth. After a leadoff walk to Adames and a walk to Susac, Jesus Rodriguez also walked to load the bases. Christian Koss singled to left, scoring Adames and keeping the bases loaded. Luis Arraez lined a single to center that plated Susac, making it 5-2. After a strikeout, Heliot Ramos ripped a two-run single to right, scoring Rodriguez and Koss. Rafael Devers reached on a fielder’s choice that allowed Arraez to score, and an error by catcher Gary Sánchez allowed Ramos to advance. Lee then doubled to right-center, driving in Ramos and Devers to cap the seven-run barrage. The Giants led 10-2.

Milwaukee got one back in the seventh. Luis Lara doubled, and after two walks loaded the bases, Turang singled to left to drive in Lara. But Jackson Chourio grounded into a double play to end the inning.

San Francisco answered with three more in the bottom of the seventh. Drew Gilbert singled, Christian Koss singled, and Arraez singled to score Gilbert. Bryce Eldridge grounded into a force out that brought Koss home, and after a Ramos single, Lee singled to drive in Eldridge. The Giants led 13-3.

Susac struck again in the eighth, leading off with his second homer of the game, a solo shot to left-center. The Giants added two more runs that inning on a Ramos single and a Drew Cavanaugh single, extending the lead to 16-3.

Brewers starter Thomas Pannone took the loss, his first decision of the season, after allowing two earned runs on three hits over three innings. He struck out two and walked two.

For San Francisco, Ramos finished 4-for-5 with three RBIs. Arraez went 4-for-5 with two RBIs. Lee was 2-for-6 with three RBIs. Susac’s two homers gave him four RBIs on the day. Caleb Kilian, Keaton Winn and Sam Hentges each threw a scoreless inning of relief for the Giants.

Milwaukee’s Turang went 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Bauers tripled and scored a run. The Brewers managed only eight hits.

The series concludes Thursday afternoon, with San Francisco traveling to San Diego to begin a four-game series, while Milwaukee heads to Los Angeles to face the Angels.
