Diaz leads Astros past Angels 7‑4

ANAHEIM (Interstat) — Yainer Diaz went 4 for 5 with a home run and three RBIs, and the Houston Astros overcame an early three-run deficit to beat the Los Angeles Angels 7-4 on Wednesday at Angel Stadium.

The game, played before 26,417 fans, lasted 2 hours, 50 minutes. The Astros improved to 55-55, while the Angels dropped to 42-67.

Diaz, who entered the game in a 2-for-16 slump over his previous four contests, provided most of Houston’s offense. He homered in the second inning, singled and scored in the sixth, drove in the go-ahead run in the seventh and added an RBI single in the ninth.

Hayden Wesneski (1-0) earned the win, allowing three earned runs on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings with four strikeouts. Bryan Abreu recorded the final four outs for his seventh save, allowing no hits and striking out one.

Mitch Farris (0-3) took the loss for the Angels. He surrendered five runs — four earned — on six hits over 5 2/3 innings, walking three and striking out six.

The Angels struck quickly in the first inning. Zach Neto walked and Mike Trout doubled to put runners at second and third. Vaughn Grissom then doubled to left field, scoring both runners. Jo Adell followed with a single to center that brought home Grissom, giving Los Angeles a 3-0 lead. The rally ended when Denzer Guzman grounded into a double play.

Houston answered in the second. With one out, Diaz launched a solo home run to left-center field, his seventh of the season. The Astros tied the game in the third when Jeremy Peña led off with a solo homer to center, his 12th. Christian Walker and Jose Altuve followed with singles, and Taylor Trammell walked to load the bases, but Diaz flied out to end the threat.

The score remained 3-3 until the sixth inning, when Houston took control. With one out, Trammell walked and Diaz singled. Cam Smith then doubled to left field, scoring both runners and putting the Astros ahead 4-3. Lucas Spence walked, and a wild pitch by Farris moved Smith to third. Smith then scored on a wild pitch during Peña’s strikeout, extending the lead to 5-3. Farris intentionally walked Yordan Alvarez, but Isaac Paredes flied out to end the inning.

Houston added a run in the seventh. Altuve led off with a single, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on Diaz’s single to center, making it 6-3.

The Angels cut the deficit to 6-4 in the eighth. Nolan Schanuel hit a ground-rule double, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Adell’s sacrifice fly to right. Wade Meckler doubled but was stranded when Guzman struck out.

Houston answered in the ninth. Walker reached on a fielding error by first baseman Schanuel, moved to second on a flyout and scored on Diaz’s single. Diaz advanced to second on a throwing error by third baseman Guzman, but Smith flied out to end the inning.

Abreu then retired the Angels in order in the bottom of the ninth, securing the victory.

Grayson Rodriguez pitched well for the Angels in a no-decision, allowing two earned runs on five hits over five innings with six strikeouts. Brent Suter contributed two scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits and striking out one.

Grissom finished 1 for 4 with two RBIs for the Angels. Peña went 1 for 5 with a home run and a run batted in for Houston. Smith drove in two runs with his double.

The Astros have won three straight games against the Angels and five of the last seven meetings between the teams. Houston’s previous two wins in this series came July 27 and July 28 by scores of 6-4 and 3-2.

Houston will return home to host the Texas Rangers on Friday, while the Angels will welcome the Milwaukee Brewers for a three-game series.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of 5-4 in favor of the Astros. Interstat’s ELO system gave Houston a 57.80 percent probability to win. Houston was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5. The combined total of 11 runs went under the over/under line of 9.5.
