Herrera’s double lifts Cardinals past Cubs 3‑2 in 10

ST. LOUIS (Interstat) — Iván Herrera’s two-run double in the bottom of the 10th inning capped a three-run rally and lifted the St. Louis Cardinals to a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night at Busch Stadium III.

The Cubs struck first in the top of the 10th when Pete Crow-Armstrong crushed a two-run homer to right-center field off Cardinals reliever Luis Gastelum, giving Chicago a 2-0 lead. But the Cardinals answered immediately in the bottom half against Cubs closer Trent Thornton.

Nathan Church started the St. Louis 10th with a single and moved to third on a base hit by Lars Nootbaar. JJ Wetherholt walked to load the bases, and Jordan Walker grounded into a force out at third base, scoring Church to make it 2-1. Herrera then lined a double down the left-field line, scoring Wetherholt and Walker to end the game.

The walk-off win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Cardinals and improved their record to 54-54. The Cubs, who had won the first two games of the series by a combined 17-5, fell to 61-47.

Gastelum, who allowed two runs on two hits in the 10th, earned the victory, his second against one loss. Thornton took the loss, falling to 2-4.

Neither team scored through the first nine innings, as both starting pitchers turned in dominant performances. Cubs left-hander Matthew Boyd worked seven shutout innings, scattering four hits and striking out five. Cardinals right-hander Dustin May countered with five scoreless innings, permitting only one hit while striking out three.

May’s outing was a sharp rebound from his previous two starts. On July 24 against Cincinnati, he took a loss after allowing one earned run on seven hits over six innings. On July 18 at Arizona, he gave up five earned runs on eight hits in five innings.

Boyd’s effort kept the Cubs in the game while the offense struggled to produce against a parade of St. Louis relievers. After May departed, Justin Bruihl, Riley O’Brien, George Soriano and Ryne Stanek each tossed a scoreless inning, combining for five strikeouts and no hits.

Chicago’s best scoring chance before extra innings came in the fourth when Alex Bregman hit a ground-rule double, but he was left stranded. In the seventh, the Cubs loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter, but Dansby Swanson struck out to end the threat.

The Cubs bullpen matched the Cardinals’ relief corps for much of the night. Jacob Webb struck out three in a perfect eighth inning, and Caleb Thielbar worked a scoreless ninth despite allowing a double to Blaze Jordan.

St. Louis outhit Chicago 7-3. Herrera paced the Cardinals with three hits and two RBIs. Crow-Armstrong accounted for the Cubs’ only extra-base hit and both RBIs.

The game lasted 2 hours 49 minutes in front of an announced crowd of 31,499.

For the Cubs, the loss ended a stretch of three wins in four games, including two dominant victories over St. Louis earlier in the week. On Tuesday, Chicago routed the Cardinals 10-2, and on Monday they won 7-3. The series continues Thursday with the finale at Busch Stadium.

The Cardinals’ win was their first in the season series against the Cubs since July 5, when St. Louis won 3-0 in Chicago. The two teams have played eight times this season, with the Cubs holding a 5-3 edge.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Chicago Cubs 6, St. Louis Cardinals 3. Interstat’s ELO system had projected the Cubs with a 55.70 percent probability to win. The Cubs had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of -1.5. The total score of 5 went over the over/under line of 7.5.
