Diamondbacks blank Pirates 3‑0 behind Rodriguez’s strong start
PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — Eduardo Rodriguez pitched six strong innings and Gabriel Moreno hit a two-run home run to lead the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 3-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday afternoon at PNC Park.
Rodriguez allowed four hits and struck out three while walking two, improving to 10-3 on the season. Brandyn Garcia worked a scoreless ninth inning for his second save, striking out two and walking one. The Diamondbacks, who improved to 57-52, took two of three in the series after an 8-7 win in 12 innings Tuesday afternoon and a 3-2 loss in 10 innings Monday.
Pirates starter Jared Jones took the loss, falling to 2-2. He went six innings, surrendering three runs on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Pittsburgh dropped to 55-54.
The game remained scoreless until the top of the fourth inning. Corbin Carroll led off with a double to right field, his 22nd of the season. After Geraldo Perdomo flied out to center, Moreno launched a 1-0 pitch over the center-field wall for his eighth home run, giving Arizona a 2-0 lead. Jones retired the next two batters, striking out Ketel Marte and Max Kepler to end the inning.
Arizona added a run in the sixth. With one out, Moreno walked. Marte singled to right, moving Moreno to third. Kepler then singled to right, scoring Moreno and extending the lead to 3-0. Nolan Arenado grounded into a forceout at third base to end the inning.
The Pirates mounted a threat in the bottom of the fourth. Nick Gonzales lined out to right, but Brandon Lowe singled to center. Bryan Reynolds followed with a single to left, moving Lowe to second. But Esmerlyn Valdez grounded into a double play, shortstop Perdomo to second baseman Ildemaro Vargas to first baseman Tim Tawa, ending the inning.
Pittsburgh also put two runners on in the seventh. Reynolds walked with one out, but Valdez flied out to right. Ryan O’Hearn then grounded into a forceout, with shortstop Perdomo forcing Reynolds at second. Marcell Ozuna popped out to end the threat.
The Pirates’ best chance came in the eighth. Jared Triolo singled to left with one out. Jhostynxon Garcia popped out to first baseman Tawa, and Henry Davis popped out to shortstop. After Gonzales lined out to center, the inning ended with Triolo stranded.
Arizona’s bullpen held firm. Carmen Mlodzinski relieved Jones in the seventh and pitched three scoreless innings, allowing two hits with one strikeout. But the Diamondbacks’ defense and timely pitching kept Pittsburgh off the board.
The Diamondbacks’ offense managed only six hits total, but their two-run homer and a run-scoring single were enough. Carroll finished 1 for 5 with a double and a run. Moreno was 1 for 3 with a walk, a home run, two RBIs and two runs. Kepler went 2 for 4 with an RBI. Marte had a single. Vargas doubled in the seventh but was left stranded.
For the Pirates, Triolo had two hits in three at-bats. Reynolds went 1 for 3 with a walk. Lowe was 1 for 4. Gonzales had one hit in four at-bats. Valdez, Garcia, O’Hearn, Ozuna and Davis combined for no hits in 17 at-bats, though Valdez drew a walk in the ninth.
Game time was 2 hours, 9 minutes. Attendance was 19,716.
The Diamondbacks continue their road trip with a visit to Cleveland to face the Guardians beginning Friday. The Pirates travel to Cincinnati to open a four-game series against the Reds on Thursday.
Arizona’s victory came in a game that saw Rodriguez control the Pirates lineup through the middle innings. He allowed a single to Gonzales in the first but induced a double play from Lowe to escape. After a single to Lowe in the fourth and a single to Reynolds, he induced the double play from Valdez. He faced the minimum in the fifth and sixth, retiring seven of the last eight batters he faced before being relieved.
Garcia entered in the ninth with a three-run lead. He struck out Lowe and Reynolds, then walked Valdez before retiring O’Hearn on a groundout to shortstop to end the game.
The series win was important for Arizona, which had lost four of its previous six games, including two of three in Washington and a 10-inning loss to the Pirates on Monday. The Diamondbacks are now two games above .500 and remain in contention in the National League West.
Pittsburgh, meanwhile, has lost three of its last four, with the lone win coming in that extra-inning affair Monday. The Pirates have struggled to generate consistent offense, scoring three or fewer runs in four of their last six games.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Arizona 6, Pittsburgh 5. Interstat’s ELO system gave Pittsburgh a 52.40 percent probability to win. Pittsburgh was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5. The total score of three runs went over the over/under line of 8.5.
