Toronto Blue Jays at Washington Nationals

WASHINGTON (Interstat) — The Washington Nationals host the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday, July 28, at 7:05 p.m. at Nationals Park in a matchup of National League East teams separated by six games in the standings.

Washington enters at 54-52, having won four of its last six. The Nationals come off a 10-7 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday, powered by two home runs and three RBIs from shortstop CJ Abrams. James Wood added two homers and three RBIs in that win. Toronto is 48-58 and dropped a 6-1 decision to the Boston Red Sox on Sunday, its sixth loss in the last eight games.

The forecast calls for 86-degree temperatures and cloudy skies.

The Blue Jays will start right-hander Kevin Gausman (5-10, 4.67 ERA) against a Washington lineup that has found its rhythm. Gausman has lost his last five decisions since June 30. In his most recent outing July 26 at Boston, he allowed three earned runs on five hits over six innings with six strikeouts in a 1-6 loss. He lasted only 3⅓ innings on July 21 against Tampa Bay, surrendering four earned runs on nine hits. Over his last five starts, Gausman has allowed at least three earned runs in four appearances and has not posted a quality start since June 18.

For the Nationals, shortstop CJ Abrams has been one of the hottest hitters in baseball. Over his last seven games, Abrams is batting .571 (16-for-28) with five home runs and 12 RBIs. He homered twice Sunday in the victory over Arizona and has multiple hits in seven of his last nine games.

The series opened Monday with a 3-1 Toronto victory. The Blue Jays will send Gausman to the mound looking to even the series before Wednesday’s finale.

Washington has been installed as a -1.5-run favorite. The over/under is set at 8.5 runs. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-3 Nationals victory.

After this two-game series, Toronto heads home to host St. Louis for three games starting Friday. Washington travels to Atlanta for a four-game set beginning Thursday.
