Rangers edge Rays 4‑1 behind Quantrill’s strong start
TAMPA, Fla. (Interstat) — The Texas Rangers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 4-1 on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, at George Steinbrenner Field before a crowd of 14,502. The game lasted 2 hours, 35 minutes.
Cal Quantrill earned the win for Texas, improving to 4-3 on the season. He pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing two hits, one earned run and striking out seven. Griffin Jax took the loss for Tampa Bay, falling to 6-8, after giving up three runs on six hits over six innings. Jacob Latz notched his 20th save with a scoreless ninth inning, allowing no hits.
Texas struck first in the second inning. Evan Carter singled off Jax, moved to second on a single by Jake Burger and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Nicky Lopez. The Rangers added another run in the third. Joc Pederson singled, Wyatt Langford doubled to center and Ezequiel Duran lifted a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Pederson. Langford advanced to third on the play but was thrown out at home on a fielder’s choice by Brandon Nimmo.
The Rays cut the lead in half in the sixth. Texas starter Quantrill walked Yandy Díaz, and after a groundout moved Díaz to second, Junior Caminero tripled to center, driving in Díaz. Quantrill exited after that at-bat, and Peyton Gray retired the next batter on a strikeout to end the inning.
The pivotal moment came in the seventh. With the Rangers clinging to a 2-1 lead, Austin Wynns led off the inning with a solo home run to left field, his first of the season, extending the Texas advantage to 3-1. That home run proved critical, as it gave the Rangers breathing room and restored a two-run cushion.
Texas added an insurance run in the eighth. Ezequiel Duran was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a single by Evan Carter and scored on Carter’s ground-ball base hit to center field. The Rangers recorded seven hits on the night, with Carter going 2 for 3 with a run batted in. Wynns finished 1 for 3 with the home run and an RBI. Langford was 1 for 5 with a double, Burger 1 for 4, Pederson 1 for 5 and Lopez 0 for 2 but drove in a run on a sacrifice fly. The Rangers also had two sacrifice flies, from Lopez and Duran.
Tampa Bay’s offense managed only five hits. Caminero had a triple and an RBI. Jonathan Aranda singled twice. Ben Williamson, Yandy Díaz and Richie Palacios also collected hits, but the Rays could not string together rallies. Texas pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts. Gray worked 0 2/3 innings, allowing one hit and no earned runs with one strikeout. Tyler Alexander tossed one inning, giving up one hit and striking out one. Latz closed with a clean ninth, recording two groundouts and a popout.
The Rangers improved to 55-52 with the win, while the Rays fell to 62-44. Texas had won two of its previous three games, including a 7-3 victory over Seattle on Monday. Tampa Bay had lost three of its last four, most recently a 1-0 shutout of Cleveland on Sunday.
Texas returns to Tampa Bay on Wednesday for the second game of the series, then travels to Houston for a three-game set beginning Friday. Tampa Bay hosts Chicago later in the week before heading to Colorado next Monday.
