Diamondbacks outlast Pirates in 12-inning thriller
PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — The Arizona Diamondbacks outlasted the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-7 in 12 innings Tuesday night at PNC Park, erasing a nine-inning collapse by their bullpen with timely hits in extra innings to snap a two-game losing streak.
Arizona built a 6-0 lead behind seven dominant innings from starter Brandon Pfaadt, who allowed six hits and struck out four without yielding a run. The Diamondbacks offense collected 16 hits, with Nolan Arenado going 3-for-5 with an RBI and a double. Ryan Waldschmidt added two hits and a double. But the Pirates, who trailed for eight innings, stormed back with three runs in the eighth and three in the ninth to force extra innings.
Pittsburgh’s comeback began in the bottom of the eighth. After Arizona reliever Ryan Thompson retired Brandon Lowe on a groundout, Bryan Reynolds walked. Esmerlyn Valdez struck out, but Ryan O’Hearn doubled to right, scoring Reynolds. Nick Gonzales singled, putting runners at the corners, and Endy Rodríguez singled to center, scoring O’Hearn and sending Gonzales to third. Marcell Ozuna then singled to short, driving in Gonzales to cut the deficit to 6-3. Jared Triolo struck out to end the inning, but the Pirates had life.
The ninth inning was even more dramatic. Pirates closer-in-waiting Kevin Ginkel, who had been perfect in the eighth, returned for the ninth. Jake Mangum led off with a double to left. Brandon Lowe then crushed a 2-2 pitch to right-center for a two-run homer, his 22nd, making it 6-5. Bryan Reynolds followed by launching a 1-0 pitch to the same area for a solo shot, his 15th, tying the game at 6-6. After Esmerlyn Valdez lined out to center, Ryan O’Hearn doubled on a pop-up that fell in left field, but Nick Gonzales struck out and Endy Rodríguez popped out to end the inning, sending the game to extra innings.
In the top of the 10th, with the automatic runner at second, Arizona manufactured a run. Tyler Locklear, who had entered as a pinch-runner, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Jorge Barrosa, which was overturned on a challenge. After James McCann struck out, Ildemaro Vargas reached on a fielder’s choice. Locklear scored when shortstop Jared Triolo’s throw to first sailed away for an error, putting Arizona ahead 7-6. Corbin Carroll was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Geraldo Perdomo struck out and Gabriel Moreno lined out.
Pittsburgh answered in the bottom of the 10th. With Rodríguez as the automatic runner, Tyler Callihan sacrificed him to third. Jared Triolo then hit a grounder to first baseman Locklear, whose throw to the plate was late and off-target, allowing Rodríguez to score and tying the game again at 7-7. Jake Mangum lined out and Brandon Lowe popped out, sending the game to the 11th.
The 11th inning saw both teams strand runners. Arizona’s Ketel Marte grounded out to first, allowing the automatic runner to reach third, but after an intentional walk to Max Kepler, Locklear grounded into a double play. In the bottom half, Pirates pitcher Gerardo Carrillo, who had entered in the 10th, walked Reynolds intentionally, then struck out Valdez and induced a double play from O’Hearn.
The Diamondbacks finally broke through in the 12th. With Locklear starting at second as the automatic runner, Barrosa sacrificed him to third. McCann then lined a single to right field, scoring Locklear to give Arizona an 8-7 lead. Ildemaro Vargas singled to center, putting runners at first and second, but Corbin Carroll grounded into a force out and Perdomo grounded out to end the inning.
Carrillo, who pitched two scoreless innings and struck out three, earned his first win of the season, improving to 1-0. Wilber Dotel, who took over in the 11th for the Pirates, allowed the go-ahead run in the 12th and was tagged with the loss, falling to 1-3.
Pfaadt’s strong start was the backbone of Arizona’s effort. The right-hander allowed just six hits and no walks while striking out four over seven innings, lowering his ERA. He was supported by an early offensive outburst. Arizona scored single runs in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings, plus two in the second.
In the first, Geraldo Perdomo tripled and scored on a Gabriel Moreno groundout. In the second, Max Kepler walked, Nolan Arenado singled, and after a force out by Tim Tawa that plated Kepler, James McCann singled and Corbin Carroll singled to drive in Tawa for a 3-0 lead. In the third, Moreno singled, advanced on a double by Kepler, and scored on Arenado’s single. In the fourth, Ryan Waldschmidt reached on an error by second baseman Brandon Lowe, allowing him to score. In the sixth, McCann singled, Waldschmidt doubled, Carroll walked, and after a strikeout, Moreno grounded into a force out that scored McCann for a 6-0 lead.
Pittsburgh’s offense, which had been held to four hits through seven innings, erupted late. The Pirates finished with 14 hits, including two each from Mangum, Lowe, O’Hearn, Gonzales, Rodríguez and Ozuna. Lowe’s homer and Reynolds’ homer in the ninth bookended the comeback.
The game took 4 hours, 1 minute and was witnessed by an announced crowd of 19,024.
Arizona improved to 56-52, while Pittsburgh fell to 55-53. The Diamondbacks avenged a 3-2, 10-inning loss to the Pirates the previous night. The two teams close the series Wednesday afternoon.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Arizona 6, Pittsburgh 5. Interstat’s ELO system gave Pittsburgh a 51.90 percent probability to win. Arizona was listed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of 15 went under the over/under line of 9.
