Pirates edge Diamondbacks 3‑2 in 10 innings
PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — Brandon Lowe singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning, and the Pittsburgh Pirates edged the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-2 on Monday night at PNC Park.
The victory lifted the Pirates to 55-52, matching the Diamondbacks’ record. Both teams remain in the thick of their respective wild-card races as the trade deadline approaches.
Arizona took a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning, but Pittsburgh answered immediately, tied the game in the eighth and finished it in extra innings. The game lasted 3 hours, 4 minutes in front of 15,412.
Merrill Kelly started for Arizona and turned in a strong outing, allowing four hits over 5 2/3 innings with no earned runs and six strikeouts. He left with the lead after the Diamondbacks broke through against Pittsburgh starter Mitch Keller.
Keller, the top star for Pittsburgh, worked 5 1/3 innings, giving up six hits and two earned runs while striking out four. He had pitched well in his previous start against the New York Yankees on July 22, allowing no earned runs over five innings in a win.
Arizona’s offense was quiet through the first five innings, managing only two hits off Keller. Both came from Max Kepler, who singled in the second and fourth innings but was left stranded each time.
The Diamondbacks finally pushed runs across in the sixth. Corbin Carroll led off with a sharp single to center. Geraldo Perdomo followed with a single to left, moving Carroll to second. After Gabriel Moreno was called out on strikes following a successful replay challenge by Pittsburgh, Ketel Marte singled on a soft ground ball to third base, loading the bases.
Kepler then delivered the biggest hit of the game for Arizona, a ground-ball double down the right-field line that cleared the bases. Carroll and Perdomo scored, giving the Diamondbacks a 2-0 lead. Marte advanced to third but was thrown out at home on a fielder’s choice by Tyler Locklear. Adrian Del Castillo grounded out to end the inning.
Pittsburgh answered in the bottom half. Jake Mangum led off with a sharp single to right. Lowe followed with a single to shortstop, scoring Mangum and cutting the deficit to 2-1. Kelly exited after that at-bat, and Juan Morillo came on in relief. Morillo retired the next two batters to escape further damage.
Kelly finished with a line of 5 2/3 innings, four hits, one earned run allowed after the inherited runner scored, and six strikeouts. Morillo threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts.
The game remained 2-1 until the bottom of the eighth. Arizona reliever Taylor Clarke entered to start the inning and quickly retired Endy Rodríguez and Jake Mangum. But Lowe doubled to left field, and Bryan Reynolds followed with a double to center field, scoring Lowe and tying the game at 2-2. Reynolds’ double was his 26th of the season. Jared Triolo lined out to left to end the inning.
Arizona threatened in the top of the ninth against Pittsburgh reliever Yohan Ramírez. Ildemaro Vargas singled with two outs, but Jorge Barrosa popped out in foul territory to end the inning.
The Pirates put a runner on in the bottom of the ninth against Clarke. Nick Gonzales singled with one out but was left at second base after a groundout and another groundout.
The game went to the 10th with the international tiebreaker rule, placing a runner on second base to start each half-inning. Arizona had Jorge Barrosa at second but could not score. Corbin Carroll lined out to third. Geraldo Perdomo reached on a throwing error by third baseman Nick Gonzales, putting runners at second and third with one out. Pittsburgh manager brought in Mason Montgomery, who intentionally walked Ketel Marte to load the bases. Kepler then lined out to center field, ending the inning.
Pittsburgh’s turn in the bottom of the 10th began with Billy Cook as the automatic runner at second. Clarke remained on the mound. Endy Rodríguez singled to right field, moving Cook to third. Jake Mangum hit a fielder’s choice ground ball that resulted in Rodríguez being cut down at third base after a relay from second baseman Ketel Marte to catcher Gabriel Moreno to third baseman Nolan Arenado and back to pitcher Clarke. Cook held at third, and Mangum moved into scoring position.
Lowe then delivered the game-winning hit, a sharp ground ball to first base that scored Cook. Mangum advanced to third on the play, but the game ended with the Pirates celebrating a 3-2 victory.
Clarke took the loss, falling to 2-2 on the season. He allowed three hits and one earned run in 1 1/3 innings. Montgomery earned his fourth win against three losses, throwing a scoreless 10th with one strikeout.
Kepler finished 3 for 5 with two RBIs. Lowe also went 3 for 5 with two RBIs. Each team collected eight and nine hits, respectively.
The two teams continue their series Tuesday night at PNC Park. Arizona then travels to Cleveland for a weekend set, while Pittsburgh heads to Cincinnati.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Arizona Diamondbacks 7, Pittsburgh Pirates 5. The ELO system gave the Pirates a 51.90 percent probability to win. Arizona had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of 5 went over the over-under line of 8.5.
