Phillies rout Yankees 11‑4 behind Stott’s five RBIs

PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — Bryson Stott drove in five runs with a home run and a double, and the Philadelphia Phillies avoided a three-game sweep by defeating the New York Yankees 11-4 on Sunday at Citizens Bank Park.

The Phillies snapped a two-game losing streak to the Yankees and improved to 57-49, while the Yankees fell to 59-46. Attendance was 42,799, and the game lasted 3 hours, 2 minutes.

Philadelphia scored in each of the first three innings. Trea Turner led off the bottom of the first with a triple and scored on Kyle Schwarber’s sacrifice fly. Stott made it 2-0 in the second with a solo home run to right field, his eighth of the season.

The decisive blow came in the third inning. With two outs, Kyle Schwarber walked, Bryce Harper doubled, and Brandon Marsh was intentionally walked to load the bases. Alec Bohm cleared the bases with a double to center field, scoring all three runners. Stott followed with an RBI single, giving the Phillies a 6-0 lead.

Yankees starter Will Warren was tagged for six runs on five hits in 3 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out four, falling to 7-5.

The Yankees mounted a comeback in the fifth inning. Ali Sánchez singled, Paul Goldschmidt walked, and after a forceout, Amed Rosario singled to drive in the first run. Jasson Domínguez grounded out to score another, and Anthony Volpe doubled to left to cut the deficit to 6-3. But Phillies starter Cristopher Sánchez settled down, retiring the next two batters to strand Volpe.

Sánchez, who improved to 13-4, worked six innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits with six strikeouts and two walks. He limited the damage to that three-run fifth.

Philadelphia answered emphatically in the sixth. Bryan De La Cruz led off with a single and reached second on a throwing error by shortstop Anthony Volpe. Justin Crawford bunted for a single, and Turner singled to left to score De La Cruz. Schwarber hit an RBI single, and after two strikeouts, Alec Bohm was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Stott then cleared the bases with a double to right field, scoring three more runs and making it 11-3.

Stott finished 3 for 4 with a home run, a double and five RBIs. De La Cruz went 2 for 2 as a pinch hitter and right fielder. Bohm had a double and three RBIs. Schwarber drove in one run and walked twice.

The Yankees added a solo home run in the seventh inning from Ben Rice, his 31st of the season, but managed only one more hit the rest of the game. Rice finished 2 for 5 with a double and his homer. Volpe had two doubles and an RBI. Rosario went 2 for 5 with an RBI.

New York had won the first two games of the series, 3-1 on Saturday and 1-0 on Friday, both at Citizens Bank Park. The Phillies had lost four of their previous five games entering Sunday.

Will Warren took the loss for the Yankees, allowing six runs in 3 2/3 innings. Reliever Tim Mayza pitched one inning for Philadelphia, giving up one earned run on one hit with two strikeouts.

The Phillies finished with 13 hits to the Yankees’ eight. Philadelphia also drew five walks and hit two batters, while the Yankees walked four times.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of New York Yankees 7, Philadelphia Phillies 4. Interstat’s ELO system gave the Phillies a 50.40 percent probability to win. Philadelphia was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5. The total of 15 runs went under the over-under line of 8.
