Padres rally past Marlins 5‑3 behind Machado’s heroics

MIAMI (Interstat) — Wandy Peralta pitched a scoreless seventh inning, Mason Miller earned his 27th save and the San Diego Padres used a four-run eighth inning to defeat the Miami Marlins 5-3 on Sunday afternoon at loanDepot Park.

The Padres, who swept the three-game series with their third straight win over the Marlins, improved to 53-53. Miami fell to 52-54.

San Diego trailed 3-1 entering the eighth inning after Miami had taken an early lead on a two-run second and a solo home run in the third. The Padres, who managed only one run through seven innings against Marlins starter Michael Petersen and relievers, broke through against the Miami bullpen in the eighth.

Jake Cronenworth led off the eighth with a sharp line-drive single to right field. Manny Machado followed with a home run to center field, his 23rd of the season, tying the game at 3. After Ty France grounded out, Jackson Merrill hit his 15th home run of the year, a fly ball to right-center, giving San Diego a 4-3 lead. Luis Rengifo then doubled to left, advanced to third on a groundout by Gavin Sheets and scored on a single by Luis Campusano, making it 5-3.

The rally erased a deficit that had stood since the second inning. Miami opened the scoring in the bottom of the second against Padres starter Walker Buehler. Liam Hicks and Griffin Conine each walked, and Esteury Ruiz sacrificed them to second and third. Graham Pauley singled to right, scoring Conine. Two batters later, Otto Lopez struck out, but the Marlins led 2-0.

In the third, Kyle Stowers hit a solo home run to right, his 13th of the season, extending Miami’s lead to 3-0.

San Diego got on the board in the fifth. Cronenworth singled, and Machado doubled to left, scoring Cronenworth to cut the lead to 3-1. But the Padres left Machado stranded, and Buehler kept the game within reach. The right-hander allowed four hits and two earned runs over 5 1/3 innings, striking out seven and walking two.

Adrian Morejon followed Buehler with a scoreless sixth inning, allowing no hits and striking out one. Peralta entered in the seventh and worked around a single, retiring the side. Yuki Matsui pitched two-thirds of an inning in the eighth, striking out two, and Miller closed the ninth with a perfect frame, striking out one.

Miami’s offense managed only five hits. Stowers had a double and a home run, while Xavier Edwards and Javier Sanoja each singled. The Marlins’ bullpen could not hold the lead. Lake Bachar, who relieved in the eighth, took the loss, allowing two runs on two hits in one inning. He fell to 1-2.

San Diego’s 13 hits were spread across the lineup. Cronenworth had three hits, including a pair of singles and a double. Machado drove in three runs with his double and home run. Rengifo had two hits, including the double. Campusano had the go-ahead RBI single. Merrill also homered. The Padres struck out seven times but drew only one walk.

Miami struck out 12 times as a team, with Buehler, Morejon, Peralta, Matsui and Miller combining for 13 strikeouts. The Marlins had no extra-base hits beyond Stowers’ homer and double.

The game lasted 2 hours, 45 minutes in front of an announced crowd of 21,675.

San Diego had entered the series on a four-game losing streak in Atlanta but won the first two games in Miami before completing the sweep. The Padres’ recent results included a 19-2 victory at Kansas City on July 19 and a 7-2 win over the Marlins on Saturday. They also won 4-2 on Friday.

Miami had lost five of its last six games entering Sunday, including a three-game sweep at Houston from July 20-22. The Marlins dropped to 1-4 on their current homestand.

The Padres now return home to face the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday, followed by a four-game series against the San Francisco Giants. Miami hosts the Philadelphia Phillies for a three-game series beginning Monday.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of San Diego 5, Miami 0. Interstat’s ELO system gave San Diego a 51.40 percent probability to win. Miami had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5. The total score of eight went over the over-under line of 8.5.
