Red Sox beat Blue Jays 6‑1 behind Suarez’s strong relief

BOSTON (Interstat) — The Boston Red Sox evened their series with the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday, riding a three-run seventh inning to a 6-1 victory at Fenway Park before 36,795 in an afternoon game that lasted 2 hours, 25 minutes.

Boston snapped a two-game losing streak and improved to 54-50, while Toronto fell to 48-58. The Red Sox took the lead in the third inning and never trailed, breaking the game open with a pair of multi-run frames.

Red Sox starter Ranger Suarez worked four scoreless innings, but the decisive blow came from the bullpen. Greg Weissert (3-2) earned the win with a scoreless fifth inning, allowing one hit and striking out one. Kevin Gausman (4-10) took the loss for Toronto, surrendering three runs on six hits over four innings while striking out five and walking one.

Boston struck first in the bottom of the third. Andruw Monasterio led off with a single to left, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Carlos Narváez and moved to third on a groundout by Masataka Yoshida. Ceddanne Rafaela then delivered a two-out single to right, scoring Monasterio for a 1-0 lead.

The Red Sox padded their advantage in the fourth. Willson Contreras drew a leadoff walk, and Caleb Durbin followed with a single to right. After Romy Gonzalez sacrificed both runners into scoring position, Jarren Duran laced a two-run single to center, making it 3-0. Duran finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs.

Toronto threatened in the top of the sixth, putting two runners on with one out after a single by Alejandro Kirk and a walk to Daulton Varsho, but Kazuma Okamoto flied out to end the inning.

The game turned decisively in the bottom of the seventh. Duran started the rally with a one-out single, and Monasterio walked. Narváez sacrificed both runners into scoring position. Pinch-hitter Jahmai Jones then delivered the key hit, a two-run double to deep center that scored Duran and Monasterio to make it 5-0. Jones, who entered for Yoshida, also scored later in the inning when Wilyer Abreu doubled to left, driving in Jones for a 6-0 lead. Abreu’s double was his 22nd of the season.

Boston’s bullpen held Toronto scoreless through eight innings. Justin Slaten worked a perfect eighth with one strikeout, and Tyron Guerrero closed out the ninth with a one-hit inning, allowing no earned runs.

Toronto finally broke through in the top of the ninth. With one out, Varsho singled. After Okamoto struck out, Ernie Clement hit a ground-rule double down the left-field line, putting runners at second and third. Andrés Giménez then singled to third, scoring Varsho and moving Clement to third. Giménez finished 3 for 5 with two doubles and an RBI. But Yohendrick Piñango lined out to left to end the game.

The Blue Jays outhit Boston 9-10, but left seven runners on base and grounded into two double plays. Toronto’s offense managed only one extra-base hit aside from Clement’s double — a double by Giménez in the third.

For Boston, Durbin went 2 for 4 with a run scored. Romy Gonzalez was 1 for 3 with a sacrifice. Monasterio singled and walked. Rafaela drove in a run and singled. Abreu had a hit and an RBI. Jones drove in two runs in his lone at-bat.

Toronto’s previous game on Saturday was a 6-0 shutout victory over Boston, marking the Blue Jays’ third win in their last four contests. The teams split the series’ first two games, with Boston winning 6-4 on Friday.

The Red Sox have now won four of their last five games overall. They will open a four-game road series Monday against the Athletics. The Blue Jays travel to Washington for a three-game set beginning Monday.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Boston 7, Toronto 2. Boston entered as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5, and Interstat’s ELO system gave the Red Sox a 57.70 percent probability to win. The total score of 7 went over the over-under line of 8.5.
