Cincinnati Reds at St. Louis Cardinals

ST. LOUIS (Interstat) — The Cincinnati Reds visit the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday at 7:15 p.m. at Busch Stadium, with the National League Central rivals looking to gain ground in a tight division race.

Right-hander Hunter Greene (2-1, 3.86 ERA) gets the start for Cincinnati (47-54). Greene has pitched well in limited action this season, striking out 38 over 42 innings. The Reds have won four of their last five games, including a 5-3 victory at Seattle on Wednesday behind a strong outing from Brady Singer. Singer, who will not start Saturday, tossed 6 2/3 innings of three-run ball against the Mariners and has been a reliable arm in the rotation. First baseman Sal Stewart homered and drove in three runs in that win.

The Cardinals (52-50) counter with right-hander Michael McGreevy (3-2, 3.72 ERA). McGreevy has been sharp over his last three starts, allowing just six earned runs in 18 2/3 innings. He took the loss Thursday against Arizona despite a quality start, giving up four runs in 6 1/3 innings. Outfielder Lars Nootbaar and designated hitter Alec Burleson each had multiple hits in that 10-6 defeat.

The teams split their six previous meetings this season, with St. Louis winning three of four in early June at Busch. Friday’s series opener was postponed due to rain, making Saturday the first game of the set.

Weather at game time is expected to be 72 degrees with cloudy skies. The projection from Interstat’s game simulator favors St. Louis 5-4, with an over/under of 8 runs. Cincinnati is a minus-1.5 favorite on the spread.

Both clubs are fighting for wild-card positioning. The Reds, 6-4 in their last 10, will send Greene against a Cardinals lineup that has struggled for consistency. St. Louis has lost four of six but remains two games above .500.

After Saturday’s contest, the teams conclude the series Sunday before Cincinnati returns home to face Cleveland, while St. Louis hosts the Chicago Cubs.
