Sugano leads Rockies past Brewers, 5‑2
MILWAUKEE (Interstat) — Tomoyuki Sugano pitched six solid innings, and the Colorado Rockies defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 5-2 on Friday evening at American Family Field, snapping a three-game losing streak and handing the National League Central leaders a rare home loss.
Sugano, who improved to 10-4, allowed two runs on six hits over six frames, striking out six and walking two. Jordan Romano earned his eighth save with a scoreless ninth, working around a pair of singles. The losing pitcher was Shane Drohan, who fell to 5-4 after giving up five runs on six hits in six innings, with six strikeouts.
The Rockies, now 42-63, jumped on Drohan early. With one out in the first, Kyle Karros doubled to right field. Cole Carrigg followed with a sharp double to left that scored Karros, and Hunter Goodman singled to left to bring home Carrigg, giving Colorado a 2-0 lead. The Brewers answered in the bottom half when Christian Yelich led off with a solo home run to center, his seventh of the season, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Colorado extended its lead in the third. Jake McCarthy tripled to right with one out, and Karros singled sharply to right to drive him in. Karros was thrown out at second on the play trying to stretch the hit, but the Rockies led 3-1. In the fourth, Willi Castro singled, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on Mickey Moniak’s sacrifice fly to center for a 4-1 advantage.
Milwaukee, now 64-39, got back within two runs in the sixth. Brice Turang led off with a home run to center, his 15th, making it 4-2. William Contreras then singled, and Garrett Mitchell walked, but Sugano and reliever Victor Vodnik stranded both runners when Andrew Vaughn struck out and Jake Bauers grounded out.
The most important sequence of the game came in the top of the seventh. After the Brewers had trimmed the lead to 4-2 and appeared to have momentum, the Rockies answered immediately. Moniak drew a leadoff walk, and pinch-hitter TJ Rumfield doubled to right field, scoring Moniak and restoring Colorado’s three-run lead at 5-2. The Brewers threatened in the ninth against Romano, getting a leadoff single from Vaughn and a single from Bauers that put runners at first and second with no outs. But Joey Ortiz popped out on the infield fly rule, Gary Sánchez struck out swinging, and Yelich lined out to right to end the game.
Key performances for Milwaukee included Turang, who went 3-for-4 with a homer and an RBI, and Contreras, who had two hits. Yelich was 1-for-5 with his solo homer. For Colorado, Karros went 2-for-4 with a double, a single, and an RBI; Castro and Goodman each had a hit; and McCarthy tripled and scored. Both teams finished with nine hits.
The Rockies had lost their previous three games, including a 8-0 shutout at home against Washington on Wednesday, but opened this road trip with a win. The Brewers had won four of their last five, including a 4-3 victory over the New York Mets on Wednesday. These two teams had not met since June, when the Brewers swept a three-game series in Colorado, outscoring the Rockies 28-12.
The game drew an announced attendance of 37,089 and lasted 2 hours, 51 minutes.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Milwaukee 5, Colorado 3, and its ELO system gave the Brewers a 77.70 percent probability to win. Milwaukee was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5 runs. The total score of 7 went over the over-under line of 8.5.
