BALTIMORE (Interstat) — Matt Olson’s three-run home run in the top of the 10th inning lifted the Atlanta Braves to a 7-6 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, snapping a two-game losing streak and extending the Orioles’ slide to three games.

The Braves, who entered the night with a 60-42 record, improved to 61-42. Baltimore fell to 50-54.

The game was tied 3-3 after nine innings before Atlanta erupted for four runs in the top of the 10th. The Orioles answered with three runs in the bottom half but fell one run short.

Elieser Hernández, who entered with no record, earned his first win of the season. He pitched the bottom of the ninth and the 10th inning, allowing three runs on two hits with one strikeout and two walks. Andrew Kittredge took the loss, falling to 1-2.

The attendance was 35,775. The game lasted 3 hours, 13 minutes.

Atlanta grabbed the lead in the top of the fourth. Ozzie Albies led off with a single. After Matt Olson struck out, Michael Harris II doubled, sending Albies to third. Mauricio Dubón lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Albies to cut Baltimore’s lead to 2-1. Austin Riley then singled to center, driving in Harris to tie the game at 2-2.

The Orioles had taken a 2-0 lead in the second. Leody Taveras walked, and Jackson Holliday singled, putting runners at first and third. Christian Encarnacion-Strand doubled sharply to left, scoring both runners.

Baltimore regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth. Taylor Ward singled, Colton Cowser walked, and Taveras bunted the runners to second and third. Holliday then hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Ward to make it 3-2.

The score remained 3-2 until the top of the eighth. With one out, pinch-hitter Dominic Smith struck out, but Drake Baldwin followed by hitting his 20th home run of the season, a solo shot to right-center, tying the game at 3-3.

Both teams threatened in the ninth. In the top half, Mauricio Dubón singled with one out, but Austin Riley grounded into a force out and Mike Yastrzemski struck out. In the bottom half, Dylan Beavers walked, Pete Alonso singled, and Hernández intentionally walked Gunnar Henderson to load the bases with one out. Taylor Ward grounded out to third, ending the inning and sending the game to extras.

Atlanta broke through in the 10th. Brewer Hicklen started the inning on second base as the automatic runner. Joey Bart singled to right, moving Hicklen to third. Jim Jarvis reached on a fielder’s choice, with a throwing error by second baseman Jackson Holliday allowing Hicklen to score and Bart to advance to third. Jarvis moved to second on the error. Drake Baldwin struck out, and Ozzie Albies struck out, bringing Olson to the plate with two outs. Olson crushed his 27th homer of the season, a three-run shot to right-center, extending the lead to 7-3.

Baltimore mounted a comeback in the bottom of the 10th. Taylor Ward started on second as the automatic runner. Tyler O’Neill singled to center, moving Ward to third. Leody Taveras struck out. Jeremiah Jackson hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Ward. Christian Encarnacion-Strand then homered, his third of the season, a two-run blast to right-center that scored O’Neill and cut the deficit to 7-6. Sam Huff struck out to end the game.

The most important sequence of the game was Olson’s home run with two outs in the top of the 10th. With the Braves clinging to a one-run lead after Jarvis’ fielder’s choice, Olson delivered the decisive blow, turning a tense extra-inning affair into a four-run cushion that proved essential when the Orioles scored three in the bottom half.

Atlanta collected 11 hits. Olson, Harris, Bart and Riley each had two hits. Olson drove in three runs, and Baldwin added a solo homer and an RBI. Baltimore had nine hits. Encarnacion-Strand had a double and a home run, driving in four runs. Alonso had two hits.

For the Braves, Dylan Lee pitched a scoreless eighth inning, allowing two hits and two earned runs while striking out two. Tyler Kinley recorded one out in the 10th, allowing no hits and no runs.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Baltimore 7, Atlanta 6. Interstat’s ELO system gave Atlanta a 53.20 percent probability to win. Atlanta had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The combined 13 runs went under the over/under line of 9.
