ARLINGTON, Texas (Interstat) — The Chicago White Sox and Texas Rangers meet Wednesday at Globe Life Park to decide their three-game series, with the host Rangers looking to build on a 2-0 victory Tuesday after the White Sox took the opener 10-3.
Chicago (53-46) enters the rubber match after splitting the first two games of the series. The White Sox pounded Texas on Monday behind third baseman Miguel Vargas, who went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Vargas, however, has been inconsistent, going hitless in four of his past seven games. He is 0-for-10 over his previous two contests entering Wednesday.
Texas (50-50) sits at .500 and is seeking its first series win since taking three of four from the Los Angeles Angels on July 7-10. The Rangers’ bullpen has been a point of emphasis, with right-hander Peyton Gray emerging as a reliable option. Gray threw 1 1/3 scoreless innings Monday, allowing one hit. Over his past six appearances, Gray has allowed one earned run in 5 1/3 innings, striking out eight.
The Rangers won Tuesday despite managing only two runs, an effort backed by scoreless relief work from Ben Peoples, Robby Ahlstrom and others.
The White Sox, who have won four of their past six games, have been powered by a lineup that scored 10 runs Monday and 12 runs July 17 at Toronto. Chicago, however, has been shut out four times this season.
Texas starter and Chicago’s pitcher for Wednesday have not been announced.
The game has an over/under of 8.5 runs, and Chicago is a -1.5 favorite. An Interstat game simulator projects a 6-5 White Sox victory.
Following this series, Chicago returns home to face Houston in a three-game set starting Friday. Texas hosts Seattle for a four-game series that begins Friday.
