Royals rally past Giants with five-run seventh inning
KANSAS CITY (Interstat) — The Kansas City Royals erased a three-run deficit with a five-run seventh inning Wednesday afternoon, defeating the San Francisco Giants 5-4 at Kauffman Stadium to complete a three-game sweep.
The victory before a crowd of 14,606 in 2 hours 12 minutes lifted Kansas City to 43-60, while San Francisco fell to 42-60.
Salvador Perez delivered the pivotal blow, a two-run home run that started the Royals’ rally. Michael Massey singled and scored on a pinch-hit single by Nick Loftin, and Lane Thomas capped the outburst with a two-run single, giving the Royals a lead they would not relinquish.
The Giants had taken a 3-0 lead in the top of the seventh on a run-scoring triple by Jung Hoo Lee and a ground-rule double by Willy Adames, chasing Royals starter Seth Lugo after six innings. But Lugo, who allowed three runs on three hits over seven innings, struck out five and earned the win, improving to 4-6.
Lee’s triple in the seventh scored Rafael Devers, who had walked. Adames then doubled to left, scoring Lee. It was the second time the Giants had scored in consecutive innings; they had taken a 1-0 lead in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Luis Arraez that scored Adames, who had walked and moved to third on a hit-by-pitch and a sacrifice bunt.
Giants starter Landen Roupp kept the Royals scoreless through five innings, allowing two hits and striking out five. Roupp departed after six innings having allowed just one hit and one walk. Sam Hentges entered to start the seventh and faced four batters, yielding four runs — three earned — on four hits and a walk. Hentges, who took the loss, fell to 1-3.
The Royals’ seven-run inning — their only scoring of the game — began with Vinnie Pasquantino’s double to right field. Perez then homered to center, his 14th of the season, cutting the deficit to 3-2. Massey reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on a throwing error by Hentges. After Isaac Collins grounded out, Starling Marte singled, putting runners at first and third. Loftin, batting for Josh Rojas, singled to left, scoring Massey to tie the game. Andrew Velazquez popped out, but Carter Jensen walked to load the bases. Thomas then singled to right, driving in Marte and Loftin to make it 5-3.
Massey finished the game 2-for-4 with a double and a run. Thomas went 1-for-4 with two RBIs. Perez was 1-for-4 with the homer and two RBIs. Loftin went 1-for-1 with an RBI. Rojas was 1-for-2. Andrew Velazquez singled once in three at-bats.
The Giants managed just four hits. Devers doubled in the second inning but was erased on a double play. Lee tripled and scored. Adames doubled and drove in a run. Casey Schmitt homered in the ninth inning off Royals closer Steven Cruz, his 20th of the season, cutting the margin to 5-4. But Cruz retired the next two batters — Lee popped out to third baseman Loftin to end the game — and earned his first save of the season.
Kansas City’s bullpen also got a scoreless inning from Daniel Lynch IV, who retired the side in order in the eighth.
San Francisco’s previous results showed the Giants had lost three straight entering the game, including the first two games of this series by scores of 3-2 and 4-3. The Giants had won four of their previous five games before arriving in Kansas City.
Kansas City had lost five of six before winning the series opener Monday and had been swept in a three-game home series by San Diego over the prior weekend.
The Royals next travel to Detroit for a four-game series starting Thursday. The Giants return home to face the Los Angeles Angels for three games beginning Friday.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Kansas City 4, San Francisco 3. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Kansas City with a 50.90 percent probability to win. San Francisco had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5.
