Montero, Lee lead Tigers past Cubs 5‑1 at Wrigley
CHICAGO (Interstat) — Keider Montero pitched six innings of one-run ball and Hao-Yu Lee delivered a three-run homer in the fourth inning as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Chicago Cubs 5-1 on Wednesday at Wrigley Field.
The win evened the three-game series at one game apiece after the Cubs had routed the Tigers 11-2 on Tuesday. Detroit improved to 48-54 while Chicago fell to 57-45.
Montero, who allowed four hits and one walk while striking out seven, improved to 7-5. The right-hander permitted only Seiya Suzuki’s solo home run in the first inning. Colin Rea took the loss for Chicago, dropping to 7-7 after allowing four runs on six hits over five innings with five strikeouts and one walk.
The Cubs grabbed an early lead in the bottom of the first. Suzuki led off the inning with his 17th home run of the season, a drive to left-center field, making it 1-0. Michael Busch followed with a single, but Montero retired Alex Bregman on a popout and Ian Happ on a strikeout to strand the runner.
Detroit answered in the second. Spencer Torkelson led off with his 19th home run, a solo shot to left-center field, tying the game at 1-1. Kerry Carpenter followed with a single, but Rea worked around the hit to keep the game tied.
The Tigers broke the game open in the fourth. Riley Greene led off with a double to center field for his 21st two-base hit of the season. Torkelson walked, putting runners at first and second. Kerry Carpenter flied out to left, and Zach McKinstry also flied out to left, bringing Lee to the plate with two outs. Lee crushed a 1-1 pitch from Rea over the center-field wall for his fifth home run of the season, a three-run shot that gave Detroit a 4-1 lead.
Lee’s homer proved to be the decisive blow. The Tigers added an insurance run in the ninth when Zach McKinstry doubled to center field, scoring Torkelson from first base to make it 5-1.
Detroit’s offense finished with nine hits. Torkelson went 2 for 3 with a home run, a walk and two runs scored. Lee had two hits, including the home run and four runs batted in. Greene doubled and scored a run. James Outman and Kevin McGonigle each had one hit.
The Cubs mustered only four hits. Happ went 2 for 3 with a double, accounting for half of Chicago’s hits. Busch singled for the other hit. Suzuki’s home run was the only extra-base hit for the Cubs. Pete Crow-Armstrong, Michael Conforto, Carson Kelly and Dansby Swanson each went hitless in three at-bats. Bregman finished 0 for 4.
Chicago’s bullpen provided some effective relief. Caleb Thielbar pitched one scoreless inning, allowing one hit with two strikeouts. Tyler Ferguson allowed one run on two hits with one strikeout in one inning.
The game lasted 2 hours, 32 minutes before an announced crowd of 40,512.
Detroit’s victory was the team’s second win in three games at Wrigley Field this week. The Tigers took the series opener 8-6 in 10 innings on Monday before losing Tuesday. Detroit improved to 4-2 on its current road trip, which included a three-game sweep at the Los Angeles Angels from July 17-19.
Chicago had won four of its previous five games before Wednesday’s loss. The Cubs had swept a two-game series against the Minnesota Twins over the weekend and had taken the opener of the series against Detroit in convincing fashion.
The Tigers will return home to host the Kansas City Royals for a four-game series beginning Thursday. The Cubs travel to Pittsburgh for a three-game series against the Pirates starting Friday.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Chicago Cubs 7, Detroit Tigers 6. Interstat’s ELO system gave the Cubs a 58.30 percent probability to win. Chicago had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The combined total of six runs went over the over-under line of eight.
