Braves Edge Padres 7‑6 in Wild Eighth-Inning Rally

ATLANTA (Interstat) — The Atlanta Braves scored six runs in the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie and then held off a five-run San Diego Padres rally in the ninth to win 7-6 on Wednesday night at Truist Park.

The victory before a crowd of 33,766 moved the Braves to 59-42, while the Padres fell to 50-52. The game lasted 2 hours, 49 minutes.

Atlanta took an early lead in the first inning. Drake Baldwin walked, Ozzie Albies walked and Matt Olson walked to load the bases. Michael Harris II grounded out to first baseman Ty France, scoring Baldwin to make it 1-0. The Braves missed a chance to add more when Austin Riley and Mike Yastrzemski struck out.

San Diego starter Michael King settled in after that, retiring 12 of the next 14 batters he faced. King worked six innings, allowing five hits and one earned run while striking out seven. He did not walk a batter after the first.

The Padres offense, meanwhile, struggled to generate anything against the Braves pitching. San Diego managed only two hits through the first six innings, both singles by Jackson Merrill in the fourth and Xander Bogaerts in the sixth. Merrill was erased on a double play, and Bogaerts was left stranded.

King departed after the sixth, and the Padres finally broke through in the seventh. Merrill led off with a home run to center field, his 14th of the season, tying the game at 1-1. The Padres then loaded the bases on singles by Bogaerts and Jake Cronenworth and an intentional walk to Fernando Tatis Jr., but Luis Rengifo popped out to end the threat.

Atlanta wasted no time reclaiming the lead in the eighth. Wandy Peralta came on in relief for San Diego. Mauricio Dubón singled to right, and Jim Jarvis doubled to right-center to score Dubón, giving the Braves a 2-1 lead. Brewer Hicklen followed with a double to left, scoring Jarvis. Drake Baldwin walked, and Ozzie Albies singled to right to score Hicklen. After Matt Olson singled to left to bring home Baldwin, Austin Riley singled to center to drive in Albies. Dominic Smith capped the outburst with a single to right that scored Olson.

The Braves sent 11 batters to the plate in the inning, collecting seven hits. Peralta was charged with four earned runs in just one-third of an inning, seeing his record fall to 1-2. Adrián Morejón allowed two inherited runners to score but retired the side without further damage.

Trailing 7-1 entering the ninth, the Padres staged a spirited comeback. Xander Bogaerts walked, and Jake Cronenworth doubled to right to put runners at second and third. Gavin Sheets singled to left, scoring Bogaerts and sending Cronenworth to third. Tatis then tripled to left, clearing the bases and pulling San Diego within 7-4. Rengifo followed with a home run to right, his first of the season, cutting the deficit to 7-6.

With the tying run on the bases and no outs, Braves closer Raisel Iglesias entered and retired Manny Machado on strikes, Ty France on strikes and Luis Campusano on a groundout to earn his 20th save. Dylan Lee, who pitched a scoreless eighth inning, was credited with the win, improving to 5-0.

Luis Rengifo went 1 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs for San Diego. Jackson Merrill was 2 for 4 with a home run and an RBI. Fernando Tatis Jr. finished 1 for 3 with two RBIs, including the triple. Xander Bogaerts walked twice and scored a run. Michael King was solid in a no-decision, and Adrián Morejón struck out two in one scoreless inning of relief.

For Atlanta, Jim Jarvis doubled and drove in a run. Brewer Hicklen doubled and drove in a run. Ozzie Albies had two hits and an RBI. Matt Olson reached base three times with two singles and a walk. Austin Riley had two hits and an RBI. Dominic Smith drove in a run with a pinch-hit single.

The Padres nearly completed a second consecutive comeback after winning the previous night, but the Braves bullpen held on. The two teams continue their four-game series Thursday.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Atlanta Braves 6, San Diego Padres 4. Interstat’s ELO system gave Atlanta a 57.00 percent probability to win. San Diego was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of -1.5. The total score of 13 went under the over/under line of 8.5.
