Baltimore Orioles at Boston Red Sox

BOSTON (Interstat) — The Boston Red Sox host the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday at 7:10 p.m. at Fenway Park, with the forecast calling for rain and a temperature of 70 degrees.

Boston (51-48) enters the game one game above .500 and looking to build on a 6-5 win over Baltimore on Monday. The Red Sox have won three of their past four games and five of their last seven.

Baltimore (49-52) dropped to three games under .500 with Monday’s loss, its second defeat in the past three games.

Left-hander Jake Bennett (5-3) will start for the Orioles. Bennett has not faced Boston this season but has been effective, posting a 3.12 ERA over his past five starts.

The Red Sox had not announced a probable starter as of Tuesday.

Shane Baz, listed as a player to watch for Baltimore, has been durable in his recent outings. Over his past four starts, he has pitched 23 2/3 innings with a 3.04 ERA, striking out 24. In Monday’s loss at Boston, Baz allowed two earned runs on seven hits over six innings with six strikeouts.

For Boston, reliever Aroldis Chapman has been nearly untouchable. He has not allowed an earned run in his past nine appearances, spanning 9 1/3 innings, and has struck out 11 over that stretch. Chapman earned the win in Monday’s game, pitching a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts.

The series continues a stretch of tight competition between the two clubs. Boston has won three of the past four meetings, though Baltimore took an 8-2 decision June 4. The Red Sox won the season series in April, taking two of three at Camden Yards, including a 17-1 blowout April 25.

Baltimore’s lineup has been inconsistent. In their past 10 games, the Orioles have scored two or fewer runs four times but have also put up eight in a win over Kansas City. Shortstop Gunnar Henderson has been a bright spot, going 3-for-5 on Monday.

Boston’s offense has been steady, scoring at least five runs in five of their past seven games. First baseman Willson Contreras had three hits and two RBIs Monday.

The Interstat game simulator projects a 7-6 Boston win.

After Wednesday’s game, the Red Sox return home July 24 to face Toronto. The Orioles host Atlanta on July 24.
