Royals edge Giants 3‑2 on sixth-inning rally

KANSAS CITY (Interstat) – The Kansas City Royals edged the San Francisco Giants 3-2 on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at Kauffman Stadium, overcoming a one-run deficit with a two-run sixth inning to secure a win in front of 25,175 fans.

The Giants struck first in the top of the fifth inning, breaking a scoreless tie with two runs. Jesus Rodriguez led off with a double to right field, and Drew Gilbert followed with an RBI single to center, scoring Rodriguez. After Christian Koss singled to left, Heliot Ramos reached on a fielder’s choice that brought home Gilbert, with shortstop Tyler Tolbert committing a throwing error that allowed Koss to reach third. The rally ended when Bryce Eldridge struck out swinging, leaving the Giants ahead 2-1.

Kansas City had taken a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Carter Jensen hit a solo home run to right-center field, his 14th of the season. The Royals then mounted the decisive rally in the sixth. Isaac Collins walked, and Salvador Perez was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Vinnie Pasquantino singled to center, scoring Collins and tying the game at 2-2. After Starling Marte was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Michael Massey struck out. But Nick Loftin delivered the go-ahead hit, a single to left that scored Perez, giving Kansas City a 3-2 lead.

The Giants threatened in the seventh when Jung Hoo Lee singled with one out, but he was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt before Drew Gilbert and Christian Koss made outs to end the inning. In the ninth, Lee walked with two outs, but Jesus Rodriguez struck out swinging, and Drew Gilbert lined out to left field to end the game.

Royals starter Luinder Avila earned the win, improving to 5-3, after pitching 6 1/3 innings, allowing five hits and two earned runs while striking out seven. Alex Lange recorded his ninth save of the season, striking out two in a perfect ninth inning. Giants starter Tyler Mahle took the loss, falling to 2-9.

The Royals outhit the Giants 8-5. Loftin went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Kansas City. Marte was 1-for-3, Collins went 1-for-1, and Massey was 1-for-4. For San Francisco, Rodriguez doubled and scored, Gilbert singled and drove in a run, and Koss singled. The Giants grounded into two double plays, killing potential rallies in the first and third innings.

The game lasted 2 hours, 41 minutes. The victory improved Kansas City’s record to 42-60, while San Francisco fell to 42-59. The Royals have now won two straight games, following Monday’s 4-3 win over the Giants. San Francisco has dropped five of its last six contests.

The most pivotal sequence came in the bottom of the sixth, when the Royals erased a one-run deficit and grabbed the lead for good. After Collins walked and Perez was hit by a pitch, Pasquantino’s game-tying single and Loftin’s go-ahead single turned the momentum squarely in Kansas City’s favor. The Giants’ inability to add insurance runs after their two-run fifth, coupled with two double plays, proved costly.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of San Francisco 5, Kansas City 4. Interstat’s ELO system gave Kansas City a 50.30 percent probability to win. San Francisco was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total of five runs went over the over/under line of nine.
