Padres defeat Braves 8‑3 behind Tatis, Machado homers

ATLANTA (Interstat) — Manny Machado homered twice and Fernando Tatis Jr. added a two-run blast in the eighth inning to lift the San Diego Padres to an 8-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday night at Truist Park.

The Padres, who entered the game at 49-51, improved to 50-51. Atlanta dropped to 58-42. San Diego outhit Atlanta 13-4, including five extra-base hits. Walker Buehler earned the win, improving to 6-5, while Reynaldo López took the loss, falling to 4-3.

The Braves struck first in the second inning. Jim Jarvis tripled to right field, driving in Mauricio Dubón and Brewer Hicklen to give Atlanta a 2-1 lead. That advantage held until the fourth.

San Diego answered emphatically. Jackson Merrill led off the top of the fourth with a solo home run to right-center, his 13th of the season, tying the game 2-2. After Luis Campusano struck out, Gavin Sheets walked and Xander Bogaerts doubled to left, putting runners at second and third. Luis Rengifo grounded out to short, scoring Sheets and giving the Padres a 3-2 lead. Tatis followed with an RBI double to right, scoring Bogaerts and making it 4-2.

The Padres added a run in the fifth when Machado led off with a home run to left, his 21st, extending the lead to 5-2. San Diego loaded the bases later in the inning on singles from Campusano and walks to Sheets and Merrill, but Xander Bogaerts struck out and Rengifo grounded out to end the threat.

Machado struck again in the sixth, leading off with a solo homer to center field, his second of the game and 22nd of the season, pushing the lead to 6-2.

Atlanta got one back in the seventh. Jarvis walked, moved to third on a Matt Olson single and scored on an Austin Riley strikeout that went as a wild pitch or passed ball, though the play-by-play shows Olson singled and Riley struck out with Jarvis scoring on the play, bringing the Braves within 6-3.

San Diego put the game away in the eighth. Luis Rengifo walked, and Tatis crushed his eighth home run of the season to left-center, scoring Rengifo and making it 8-3.

Buehler worked six innings, allowing two runs on two hits while walking five and striking out six. He exited after the sixth with a 6-2 lead. The Padres bullpen held the Braves to one run over the final three innings. López lasted 4 1/3 innings, surrendering five earned runs on nine hits with six strikeouts and three walks.

Offensively, the Padres were led by Machado, who finished 2-for-5 with two home runs and two RBIs. Tatis went 2-for-5 with a double, a home run and three RBIs. Merrill contributed a home run and a single. Bogaerts doubled and scored twice. For Atlanta, Jarvis was the lone bright spot, going 2-for-3 with a triple, two RBIs and a walk. Olson added a single in four at-bats. Michael Harris had a double.

The Braves managed only four hits and struck out 12 times. They left nine runners on base.

San Diego snapped a two-game losing streak, including a 3-2 loss in the opener of this four-game series Monday. The Padres have now won seven of their last 11 games. Atlanta, which had won three of its previous four, dropped its second straight.

Attendance was 31,870. The game lasted 2 hours, 50 minutes.

The two teams continue the series Wednesday afternoon at Truist Park. San Diego then travels to Miami for a weekend set, while Atlanta heads to Baltimore.
