Mariners Rout Reds 8‑0 Behind Raleigh Grand Slam

SEATTLE (Interstat) — George Kirby pitched six scoreless innings, Cal Raleigh hit a grand slam and the Seattle Mariners routed the Cincinnati Reds 8-0 on Monday night at T-Mobile Park.

The Mariners, who improved to 51-50, pounded out 13 hits and broke the game open with a six-run seventh inning. The Reds fell to 45-54 and managed only three hits, all singles, as Kirby struck out six and walked one.

Kirby, who earned his eighth win against eight losses, allowed those three hits in six innings and did not give up an earned run. He threw 89 pitches, 59 for strikes. Cincinnati starter Andrew Abbott took the loss, falling to 5-6, after allowing one run on four hits over five innings. Abbott walked two and struck out five.

The game was scoreless through four innings. In the top of the third, the Reds put two runners on base with singles from Edwin Arroyo and Ke’Bryan Hayes, but a forceout and a double play ended the threat. Elly De La Cruz walked to lead off the first but was stranded, and Dane Myers singled in the fifth but was left on base.

Seattle broke the deadlock in the bottom of the fifth. Victor Robles led off with a single, advanced on a popout and a strikeout, then scored on a single by Julio Rodríguez. That gave the Mariners a 1-0 lead and put Rodríguez at second, but Dominic Canzone struck out to end the inning.

The game turned decisively in the seventh. Robles started the inning with a single, and Luke Raley followed with a single that moved Robles to third. Colt Emerson lifted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Robles and making it 2-0. Randy Arozarena singled, sending Raley to second, and Weston Wilson doubled down the right-field line to drive in Raley, making it 3-0. After an intentional walk to Canzone loaded the bases, Raleigh crushed a 1-0 pitch to left-center field for his 10th home run of the season, clearing the bases and giving Seattle a 7-0 advantage.

The Mariners tacked on another run in the eighth. Colt Emerson singled, Arozarena was hit by a pitch, and after a popout, Canzone singled to load the bases. Raleigh grounded into a forceout that scored Emerson, making it 8-0. Relievers Nick Davila and Michael Rucker each pitched a perfect inning of relief, with Rucker striking out three.

Robles led the Seattle offense, going 4-for-4 with three singles and a double, scoring three runs. Arozarena went 2-for-3 with a walk and was hit by a pitch, scoring twice. Raleigh finished 1-for-5 with the grand slam and five runs batted in. Rodríguez went 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI. Wilson went 1-for-2 with a double and an RBI.

For Cincinnati, Arroyo, Hayes and Myers each had one hit. De La Cruz walked twice but the Reds could not advance a runner past third base. The Reds have now lost two of their last three games after taking two of three from the Colorado Rockies over the weekend.

The Mariners have won two straight after splitting a four-game series with the San Francisco Giants. Seattle is now one game above .500 for the first time since July 5.

Attendance was announced at 35,929. The game lasted 2 hours, 34 minutes.

The teams meet again Tuesday night for the second game of the three-game series. Cincinnati then travels to St. Louis for a three-game set beginning Friday, while Seattle heads to Texas for four games against the Rangers starting Friday.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Seattle Mariners 4, Cincinnati Reds 3. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Seattle with a 59.20 percent probability to win. Seattle was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total of eight runs went under the over-under line of 7.5.
