Cardinals’ 7‑0 lead erased in 8‑7 loss to Diamondbacks
PHOENIX (Interstat) — The St. Louis Cardinals built a seven-run lead through five innings Sunday afternoon at Chase Field, but the Arizona Diamondbacks stormed back with eight unanswered runs, capped by Max Kepler’s walk-off double in the 10th inning for an 8-7 victory.
A crowd of 28,069 watched the three-hour, 24-minute game that evened the four-game series at one win apiece and left both clubs hovering near .500. The Cardinals fell to 51-47, while the Diamondbacks improved to 51-48.
The Cardinals seized control immediately, scoring five runs in the third inning off Arizona starter Eduardo Rodriguez. Blaze Jordan led off the frame with a two-out triple to left field, scoring Lars Nootbaar, who had walked. JJ Wetherholt followed with an RBI single, and Iván Herrera singled to put runners on the corners. Jordan Walker then doubled sharply to left, driving in Wetherholt and moving Herrera to third. After a strikeout, Alec Burleson lined a two-run single to center, scoring Herrera and Walker for a 5-0 lead.
St. Louis added two more in the fifth. Burleson led off with a single, and after a flyout and a walk, Blaze Jordan delivered a two-run single to right field, bringing home Burleson and José Fermín. The Cardinals carried a 7-0 advantage into the bottom of the sixth.
Arizona began its comeback in the sixth against Cardinals starter Andre Pallante. Adrian Del Castillo doubled, and Ryan Waldschmidt singled to put runners at the corners. Ketel Marte singled to plate Del Castillo for the Diamondbacks’ first run. A walk to Geraldo Perdomo loaded the bases, and after a flyout, Gabriel Moreno walked to force in Waldschmidt. The Diamondbacks trimmed the lead further in the seventh. Pinch-hitter Adrian Del Castillo singled off reliever George Soriano, and after a strikeout and a flyout, Geraldo Perdomo hit an inside-the-park home run to left field. The ball eluded left fielder José Fermín, allowing Del Castillo to score ahead of Perdomo, who circled the bases for his seventh homer of the season. The score became 7-5.
Arizona tied the game in the eighth. With one out, Tyler Locklear singled off Soriano. Nolan Arenado followed by crushing a 1-0 pitch to left-center field for his 13th home run, scoring Locklear and knotting the game at 7.

The Cardinals could not capitalize in the top of the 10th. Under the extra-innings rule, Wetherholt started at second base. Iván Herrera singled to put runners at the corners with no outs, but Jordan Walker popped into a double play, and Nathan Church grounded out to end the inning.
Arizona won it in the bottom of the 10th. With Jorge Barrosa starting at second base, Gabriel Moreno lined out. Kepler then stepped in and ripped a 2-1 pitch from Luis Gastelum down the right-field line for a double that scored Barrosa, ending the game.
