San Francisco Giants at Seattle Mariners
SEATTLE (Interstat) — The San Francisco Giants aim for a series sweep Sunday evening against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park, with first pitch set for 7:10 p.m. under cloudy skies and 74-degree temperatures.
Left-hander Robbie Ray (8-6, 3.82 ERA) takes the mound for San Francisco (42-55), while Seattle (48-50) counters with right-hander Logan Gilbert (7-6, 3.41 ERA). The pitching matchup features two veterans seeking consistency after their clubs split a season series that has been lopsided so far this weekend.
San Francisco won Friday’s series opener 7-0 behind a dominant start from Landen Roupp, who tossed seven scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out two. Willy Adames drove in four runs with a home run, and Bryce Eldridge added a two-run homer. Saturday’s series opener ended in a scoreless tie after a lengthy weather delay, setting up a traditional nine-inning finale Sunday.
Roupp has been a bright spot for the Giants. Over his past two starts, he has thrown 15 shutout innings, yielding only five hits. He earned wins against Toronto on July 6 (eight innings, one run) and Seattle on July 17. However, he was roughed up June 30 at Arizona, giving up six earned runs in 2 2/3 innings.
Seattle’s Bryce Miller will be a key figure out of the bullpen after a rough outing Friday, when he allowed seven hits and two earned runs over 5 2/3 innings in a loss. Miller has been effective at times, including a seven-inning shutout against the Los Angeles Angels on July 2, but has struggled with command, allowing nine hits in five innings July 9 at Miami.
The Mariners have lost four of their past five games, including a 2-1 mark in a three-game series July 10-12 at Tampa Bay. Seattle took two of three from Toronto at home July 3-5 but dropped a series at Miami earlier this month.
San Francisco enters having won four of its past five, including a three-game sweep of Colorado at home July 9-12. The Giants lost two of three to Toronto before the break.
The Interstat game simulator projects a 4-3 victory for San Francisco. Seattle is installed as a minus-1.5 favorite, with the over/under set at 7 runs.
After Sunday’s game, San Francisco travels to Kansas City for a three-game series starting Monday, while Seattle hosts Cincinnati for a three-game set.
