Orioles Outlast Astros in 11-Inning Thriller, 4‑2

HOUSTON (Interstat) — The Baltimore Orioles outlasted the Houston Astros 4-2 in 11 innings Saturday evening at Daikin Park, winning their second consecutive game in the series and improving to 48-51.

The Orioles struck first in the fourth inning against Astros starter Spencer Arrighetti, who otherwise dominated. With one out, Pete Alonso walked and Samuel Basallo was hit by a pitch. Dylan Beavers followed with a double to right field, scoring Alonso and sending Basallo to third. That was the only run Arrighetti allowed over five innings, yielding one hit and striking out six.

Baltimore starter Trevor Rogers matched Arrighetti’s brilliance. The left-hander worked 6 1/3 innings, scattering seven hits and striking out eight while allowing one run. Rogers, who also earned a win July 9 against the Chicago Cubs with a similar six-inning, one-run outing, gave his team a chance to hold the lead deep into the game.

Houston tied the game in the seventh. Zach Dezenzo led off with a single, and Lucas Spence followed with another single, putting runners at the corners. Nick Allen executed a sacrifice bunt, scoring Dezenzo and moving Spence to second. Orioles reliever Rico Garcia then intentionally walked Yordan Alvarez, but Isaac Paredes grounded out to end the inning with the score knotted at 1-1.

Both teams’ bullpens held firm over the next two innings. Astros relievers AJ Blubaugh and Josh Hader each fired a scoreless frame, with Hader striking out the side in the ninth. For Baltimore, Yennier Cano, Tyler Wells and Cam Sanders each worked a scoreless inning, with Sanders striking out one.

The game moved to extra innings, and the Orioles grabbed the lead in the top of the 10th. With Leody Taveras placed at second base as the automatic runner, Christian Encarnacion-Strand singled to put runners at the corners. Jeremiah Jackson then laid down a sacrifice bunt, scoring Taveras and moving Encarnacion-Strand to second. Adley Rutschman lined out and Gunnar Henderson struck out, but Baltimore took a 2-1 lead.

Houston answered in the bottom of the 10th. With Spence at second, Nick Allen bunted for a single, putting runners at the corners. Yordan Alvarez then doubled down the right-field line, scoring Spence and sending Allen to third. Paredes reached on a throwing error by Henderson, loading the bases with no outs. Jose Altuve then flied to right, and Tyler O’Neill threw to catcher Samuel Basallo, who tagged out Allen at home for a double play. LaMonte Wade Jr. bunted back to pitcher Andrew Kittredge for the third out, leaving the game tied 2-2.

In the 11th, Baltimore broke through again. With Gunnar Henderson on second as the automatic runner, Taylor Ward walked. Alonso struck out, and Basallo struck out for the second out. O’Neill then singled to center, scoring Henderson and sending Ward to second. Leody Taveras followed with a single to right, scoring Ward to make it 4-2.

Kittredge, who earned the win, worked two innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits while striking out one. Enyel De Los Santos took the loss for Houston, falling to 0-3. Cam Sanders earned his first save of the season with a scoreless 11th, striking out Zach Dezenzo to end the game.

Attendance was 31,649, and the game lasted 3 hours, 26 minutes.

The most important stretch of the game occurred in the 10th and 11th innings, when both teams traded runs and the outcome remained in doubt until the final out. Baltimore’s ability to answer Houston’s tying rally in the 10th with two runs in the 11th proved decisive.

Trevor Rogers was the top star for Baltimore, delivering his second straight quality start. He allowed one earned run on seven hits with eight strikeouts and no walks. His effort set the tone for a pitching staff that held the Astros to nine hits and limited them to two runs despite 10 walks issued by Orioles pitchers.

Other key performances included Arrighetti’s five-inning, one-hit, one-run outing for Houston, and Blubaugh’s two scoreless frames with three strikeouts. Hader struck out three in a perfect ninth. For Baltimore, Wells and Sanders each threw a scoreless inning, with Sanders recording the save. Rico Garcia, Yennier Cano and Tyler Wells each contributed zeros.

The Orioles improved to 2-0 in the series, having won 3-2 on Friday. They will face Houston again Sunday before traveling to Boston for a three-game set beginning Monday. Houston has lost five of its last seven and will host Baltimore on Sunday before a homestand against Miami.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of 7-4 in favor of Baltimore. Interstat’s ELO system gave Houston a 53.20 percent probability to win. Baltimore was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of six went over the over/under line of 8.5.
