Blue Jays edge White Sox 1‑0 on Bieber’s strong outing
TORONTO (Interstat) — Shane Bieber pitched seven innings of four-hit ball and George Springer drove in the only run with a fourth-inning single as the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Chicago White Sox 1-0 on Saturday afternoon at Rogers Centre.
The win evened the three-game series after Chicago hammered Toronto 12-4 on Friday. The Blue Jays improved to 46-52, while the White Sox fell to 51-46.
Bieber (1-1) allowed no runs, walked two and struck out seven. He retired the side in order in the third and fifth innings and got a double play in the sixth to erase a leadoff walk. Louis Varland pitched a perfect ninth for his 20th save, striking out one.
Davis Martin (9-4) took the loss despite allowing only one run on five hits in five innings. He walked three and struck out three.
The game’s decisive moment came in the bottom of the fourth. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. led off with a double to left field, and Springer followed with a ground-ball single through the middle that scored Guerrero. Toronto had runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth but could not extend the lead.
Chicago had four hits, all for extra bases except a bunt single. Miguel Vargas doubled in the first inning, Munetaka Murakami doubled in the fourth, Braden Montgomery doubled in the fifth, and Chase Meidroth reached on a bunt single in the eighth. The White Sox stranded Montgomery at third in the fifth after a one-out groundout advanced him, but Meidroth’s hit was followed by two strikeouts.
Toronto starter Shane Bieber worked out of a jam in the fourth after Murakami’s double and a walk to Colson Montgomery put two on with two out. Bieber struck out Kyle Teel to end the threat. In the sixth, Bieber induced a double-play grounder from Vargas after Murakami had walked.
The Blue Jays’ bullpen also shut the door. Jeff Hoffman pitched a scoreless eighth inning with two strikeouts, and Varland retired the side in the ninth on a groundout and two strikeouts.
Toronto’s offense managed five hits. Guerrero finished 2-for-3 with a double and a walk. Daulton Varsho went 1-for-3 with a double, Andrés Giménez went 1-for-3, and Springer was 1-for-4. Ernie Clement, Nathan Lukes, Kazuma Okamoto and Alejandro Kirk each went hitless in four, four, four and two at-bats, respectively. Myles Straw struck out as a pinch-hitter in the seventh.
Martin retired the first two batters he faced in the first before Guerrero singled, but Springer lined out to end the inning. Martin worked around a walk in the third and a single in the fifth before exiting after 97 pitches.
The game, played in front of 41,775 fans, lasted 2 hours, 6 minutes.
Chicago had won five of its previous six games, including a 12-4 rout of Toronto on Friday, but could not replicate that production Saturday.
The White Sox return to Rogers Centre on Sunday for the series finale before heading to Texas for three games against the Rangers. Toronto hosts Tampa Bay for a four-game series starting Monday.
In the final analysis, Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Blue Jays 5, White Sox 4. Interstat’s ELO system had given Toronto a 59.1 percent probability to win. Chicago had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of one run went over the over/under line of 8.5.
