Phillies beat Mets 6‑1 behind Luzardo’s strong start
PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — Jesús Luzardo pitched effectively into the sixth inning, Trea Turner homered and drove in a run, and the Philadelphia Phillies defeated the New York Mets 6-1 Saturday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park.
The Phillies improved to 55-44, while the Mets dropped to 41-58. The win avenged a 4-1 loss to the Mets on Friday and gave Philadelphia a split of the first two games of the four-game series.
Luzardo, who entered with an 8-4 record, allowed one run on three hits over six innings. He struck out eight and walked two, earning his ninth victory of the season. Sean Manaea took the loss for the Mets, falling to 2-5 after giving up four runs on six hits in four and two-thirds innings. He walked two and struck out five.
The Mets struck first in the top of the second inning. Tyrone Taylor led off with a home run to left-center field, his seventh of the season, giving New York a 1-0 lead. The Mets had a chance to add more when A.J. Ewing reached on a fielding error by shortstop Trea Turner, but Eric Wagaman struck out and Francisco Lindor struck out on a foul tip to end the inning.
Philadelphia answered immediately in the bottom of the first. Trea Turner singled, and Kyle Schwarber followed with a two-run home run to right field, his 33rd of the season, scoring Turner and putting the Phillies ahead 2-0.
The Phillies extended their lead in the fifth inning. Trea Turner led off with a solo home run to left-center field, his 12th of the season, making it 3-1. Kyle Schwarber walked, and Alec Bohm singled to left, scoring Schwarber and stretching the lead to 4-1. The Mets managed to limit further damage when Brandon Marsh struck out and a walk to J.T. Realmuto loaded the bases, but Derek Hill struck out to end the inning.
Philadelphia added two more runs in the sixth. Bryson Stott tripled to center field, and Trea Turner walked. Kyle Schwarber walked to load the bases, and Bryce Harper singled to right, scoring Stott and Turner to push the lead to 6-1. The Phillies threatened again later in the inning but were unable to add.
Luzardo was replaced after the sixth inning by Orion Kerkering, who struck out one in a scoreless seventh. José Alvarado pitched a scoreless eighth, allowing one hit and striking out one. The Mets managed only three hits in the game, all singles. Taylor’s home run in the second was their only extra-base hit. Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto and Bo Bichette combined to go 0 for 11 with five strikeouts.
The Phillies collected 12 hits, led by Trea Turner, who went 3 for 4 with a home run, an RBI and three runs scored. J.T. Realmuto went 2 for 3 with a walk. Edmundo Sosa went 2 for 4. Alec Bohm went 2 for 5 with an RBI. Bryce Harper drove in two runs with a single and also was hit by a pitch. Kyle Schwarber had a home run and two RBIs.
The most critical sequence of the game occurred in the fifth inning when the Phillies turned a 2-1 lead into a 4-1 advantage. Trea Turner’s leadoff home run broke a string of four consecutive scoreless innings for both teams, and Alec Bohm’s RBI single provided the Phillies with a three-run cushion. The Mets never threatened afterward.
Defensively, the Mets committed two errors, one by right fielder Carson Benge and one by shortstop Francisco Lindor, both of which led to unearned runs. The Phillies played error-free baseball.
The game lasted 2 hours, 49 minutes in front of an announced crowd of 41,133.
The Mets return Sunday for the series finale before traveling to Milwaukee for a three-game set against the Brewers. The Phillies host the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday.
