Padres Rally Past Blue Jays, 5‑4
SAN DIEGO (Interstat) — Manny Machado delivered a game-tying single and Ty France followed with a go-ahead sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, lifting the San Diego Padres to a 5-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday afternoon at PETCO Park.
The win gave the Padres a split of the three-game series after they lost the opener 5-3 on Friday and won 8-7 on Saturday. San Diego improved to 48-48, while Toronto fell to 45-51.
Attendance was 41,675 with a game time of 2 hours, 32 minutes.
Toronto struck first in the top of the first inning when Nathan Lukes hit a solo home run to right field, his fifth of the season. Kazuma Okamoto followed with a double, but the Blue Jays could not add to the lead.
San Diego answered in the bottom of the second. Machado singled, and after Gavin Sheets walked, Ty France singled to load the bases. Jake Cronenworth singled to left field, scoring Machado to tie the game at 1-1. With the bases still loaded, Rodolfo Duran popped out. Sung-Mun Song then walked, forcing in Sheets to give the Padres a 2-1 lead. Fernando Tatis Jr. struck out and Jackson Merrill struck out, but during Song’s walk, Ty France moved to third and Cronenworth to second. Merrill’s strikeout ended the inning with San Diego ahead 3-1.
Toronto tied the game in the fourth inning. After two quick outs, Andres Gimenez doubled to right field. Ernie Clement followed with a two-run home run to left field, his eighth, scoring Gimenez to make it 3-3.
The score remained deadlocked through the fifth, sixth and seventh innings as both bullpens held. Toronto threatened in the third but stranded two runners. San Diego had a scoring chance in the sixth when Machado singled, but Gavin Sheets struck out and Ty France lined out to end the inning.
Toronto broke the tie in the top of the eighth inning. With one out, Daulton Varsho reached on a force out and moved to second on a groundout. San Diego pitcher Adrian Morejon intentionally walked Alejandro Kirk. Jonatan Clase then singled to center field, scoring Varsho and giving the Blue Jays a 4-3 lead. Gimenez grounded out to end the inning.
The Padres answered immediately in the bottom of the eighth. Xander Bogaerts led off with a single to second base. Machado followed with a single to center field, scoring Bogaerts to tie the game at 4-4. Gavin Sheets grounded out, moving Machado to second. Then, with one out, Ty France hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring pinch-runner Jase Bowen to give San Diego a 5-4 lead. Cronenworth singled, but Duran flied out to end the inning.

The most critical sequence came in the bottom of the eighth. After Toronto had taken a one-run lead, the Padres quickly tied the game on Machado’s single and took the lead on France’s sacrifice fly. The rally erased Toronto’s momentum and gave San Diego its first lead since the second inning.
The Blue Jays had won the first game of the series and had a chance to take a series win with a victory Sunday, but the Padres’ late comeback evened the set. Toronto returns home to face the Chicago White Sox on Friday, while San Diego travels to Kansas City for a three-game series starting Friday.
Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Toronto 5, San Diego 3. Interstat’s ELO system gave San Diego a 51.30 percent probability to win. Toronto was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5 runs. The total of nine runs went over the over/under line of eight.
