Giants rally past Rockies 3‑1 behind strong pitching

SAN FRANCISCO (Interstat) — The San Francisco Giants defeated the Colorado Rockies 3-1 on Sunday evening at Oracle Park, taking the final game of a four-game series in front of 33,354 fans. The game lasted 2 hours, 21 minutes.

Giants left-hander Erik Miller earned the win, improving to 2-0 on the season, while Rockies right-hander Antonio Senzatela took the loss, falling to 9-2. Miller worked a scoreless eighth inning, striking out one and allowing no hits. Senzatela allowed three runs on eight hits over seven-plus innings, striking out four and walking three.

The Rockies struck first in the opening inning. Center fielder Jake McCarthy led off the game with an inside-the-park home run, his 10th of the season, on a fly ball to right field that eluded Giants right fielder Jung Hoo Lee. McCarthy circled the bases as the ball caromed around the outfield, giving Colorado a 1-0 lead. The Rockies added a single from Hunter Goodman later in the inning, but Giants starter Keaton Winn, who tossed two innings of one-run ball before departing, stranded Goodman at first.

San Francisco answered in the fourth inning. With one out, designated hitter Bryce Eldridge drew a walk off Senzatela. Shortstop Willy Adames followed with a single to left, moving Eldridge to third. Drew Gilbert then lined a single to left, scoring Eldridge and tying the game at 1-1. The Giants loaded the bases on a walk to catcher Drew Cavanaugh, but left fielder Heliot Ramos flied out to right to end the threat.

Both teams traded scoreless frames through the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. Colorado managed only two hits after the first inning, both singles by Goodman and second baseman Tyler Freeman, while the Giants stranded six runners over the middle innings.

The decisive moment came in the bottom of the eighth. Third baseman Rafael Devers led off with a walk from Senzatela. After Jung Hoo Lee flied out, Eldridge singled to right, sending Devers to third. Adames then lined a single to left, scoring pinch runner Grant McCray to break the 1-1 tie. Gilbert grounded into a force out, but the Giants added an insurance run on a wild pitch in the same inning. The final score stood at 3-1 after Drew Cavanaugh struck out to end the inning.

Colorado mounted a brief threat in the ninth against Giants closer Trevor McDonald, who recorded his first save of the season. Goodman singled to left with one out, but third baseman Casey Schmitt fielded a grounder from TJ Rumfield for a force out at second, and McDonald struck out Kyle Karros and got Cole Carrigg to fly out to right to end the game.

The Giants outhit the Rockies 8-4. Key offensive contributors for San Francisco included Gilbert, who drove in the tying run in the fourth; Schmitt, who had a single and made several defensive plays at third; and Adames, whose eighth-inning single proved decisive. Ramos also singled twice for the Giants.

The victory gave San Francisco a 3-1 series win, following a 4-2 win Saturday, a 4-3 loss Friday and an 8-2 win Thursday. The Giants improved to 41-55 on the season, while the Rockies fell to 39-59.

The Rockies had won four of their previous six games before the series, including a 7-6 victory over the Giants on July 5 in Denver. The Giants had lost seven of their previous nine games entering Sunday.

Colorado will host the Cincinnati Reds on Friday to begin a four-game homestand. San Francisco travels to Seattle for a three-game series against the Mariners starting Friday.
