Arizona Rallies Past Dodgers 5‑3 for Third Straight Win

LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — The Arizona Diamondbacks completed a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers with a 5-3 victory Sunday evening at Dodger Stadium, using a pair of two-run innings and a crucial ninth-inning homer to overcome a 61,967-strong crowd.

Arizona improved to 49-47, while the Dodgers fell to 61-36. The Diamondbacks had won the first two games of the series by scores of 9-2 and 9-3, sweeping a three-game set in Los Angeles for the first time since 2019.

Shohei Ohtani opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, launching his 22nd home run of the season to center field off Arizona starter Ryne Nelson. The solo shot gave the Dodgers a 1-0 lead. Two innings later, Ohtani doubled on a sharp line drive to right, putting himself in scoring position with no outs. After Andy Pages walked, Freddie Freeman flied out, advancing Ohtani to third and Pages to second. Mookie Betts popped out, but Tommy Edman delivered a two-run single to left field, scoring Ohtani and Pages to extend the Dodgers’ lead to 3-0.

Arizona’s offense struggled early against Dodgers starter Edgardo Henriquez, striking out seven times through the first four innings. But the Diamondbacks broke through in the fifth. Ildemaro Vargas led off with a double to center field, and Nolan Arenado followed with a double of his own, scoring Vargas to make it 3-1. Tim Tawa reached on a fielding error by center fielder Andy Pages, putting runners at second and third. Ryan Waldschmidt then lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Arenado and trimming the deficit to 3-2.

The Diamondbacks tied the game and took the lead in the sixth. Geraldo Perdomo walked and advanced to third on a flyout by Corbin Carroll. Gabriel Moreno walked, and Lourdes Gurriel Jr. reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Perdomo on a throwing error by third baseman Max Muncy. Moreno moved to third on the play. Vargas then singled to right field, driving in Moreno and giving Arizona a 4-3 lead. Vargas was thrown out at second attempting to advance on the throw.

Arizona’s bullpen took over from there. Ryan Thompson, who entered in the sixth, pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out one. He earned the win, improving to 4-2. Paul Sewald recorded the final three outs for his 22nd save of the season. Henriquez took the loss, falling to 4-1 after allowing one earned run on one hit in two-thirds of an inning.

The Dodgers had a chance to tie the game in the eighth when Andy Pages walked with one out, but Freddie Freeman grounded into a double play to end the inning. In the ninth, Tim Tawa provided insurance with his third home run of the season, a solo shot to center field off Dodgers reliever Brock Stewart. Tawa finished 1 for 4 with the homer and a run scored.

For the Dodgers, Edman drove in two runs, going 1 for 4. Ohtani had two hits, including a double and a home run. The rest of the Dodgers lineup managed only one more hit, as Arizona pitchers held Los Angeles to three hits overall. Arizona collected five hits, with Vargas going 2 for 4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored.

The game took 2 hours, 54 minutes.
