Cantillo strikes out nine as Guardians top Marlins 5‑2
MIAMI GARDENS (Interstat) — Brayan Rocchio homered and drove in two runs, and the Cleveland Guardians completed a three-game sweep of the Miami Marlins with a 5-2 victory Sunday afternoon at loanDepot Park.
Rocchio went 2 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs, and Chase DeLauter added a solo homer in the ninth inning for the Guardians, who improved to 51-46. The Marlins dropped to 52-45.
Cleveland struck first in the opening inning. Travis Bazzana walked, and Rocchio followed with an RBI single to right field that scored Bazzana and sent Rocchio to second. Kyle Manzardo then lined a single to left, plating Rocchio to give the Guardians a 2-0 lead.
Miami answered in the third. Heriberto Hernández doubled, moved to third on a groundout and scored on Xavier Edwards’ single to left, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
Rocchio extended Cleveland’s lead in the fifth, launching a fly ball to right field for his eighth homer of the season. The solo shot made it 3-1.
The Guardians added a run in the seventh on a two-out single by Kahlil Watson. Bazzana, who had been hit by a pitch, scored from third after Watson’s ground ball deflected off pitcher Lake Bachar. Watson finished 2 for 5 with an RBI.
Cleveland padded its lead in the ninth when DeLauter hit his 11th homer of the season, a solo shot to right field that made it 5-1.
Miami attempted a rally in the bottom of the ninth. Griffin Conine hit a one-out homer, his fifth, to right center, cutting the gap to 5-2. Joe Mack followed with a single, but Guardians reliever Cade Smith struck out Otto Lopez to end the game.
Smith worked one inning, allowing two hits and one earned run while striking out two. He earned his second hold of the season. For the Marlins, the loss went to starter Tyler Phillips, who allowed three runs on six hits over five innings with four strikeouts and two walks. Phillips fell to 2-4.
Cleveland starting pitcher Joey Cantillo earned the win, improving to 8-4. Cantillo allowed one run on five hits over five innings, striking out six and walking three. He did not factor into the decision after the early offense gave him a lead, but he kept the Marlins at bay.
The Guardians’ bullpen provided effective relief. Shawn Armstrong threw a scoreless eighth inning, retiring all three batters he faced. Franco Aleman pitched a perfect seventh, striking out one. Hunter Gaddis and Cade Smith combined for the final three innings, with Smith allowing the lone run.
Cleveland outhit Miami 11-8. Patrick Bailey went 1 for 3 with a single, and Petey Halpin collected a hit and a walk in three at-bats. Gabriel Arias singled in four trips to the plate.
For Miami, Heriberto Hernández doubled and scored. Xavier Edwards had two hits and an RBI. Liam Hicks singled in the first inning but was thrown out at second trying to advance on the throw. Javier Sanoja and Otto Lopez each had a single. Brian Navarreto caught the game but did not reach base.
The game lasted 3 hours, 2 minutes in front of an announced crowd of 17,147.
Cleveland swept the three-game series, having won 4-1 on Saturday and 3-2 on Friday. The Guardians now return home for a six-game homestand beginning Friday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. After that, they host the Minnesota Twins for four games before traveling to Tampa Bay.
Miami, meanwhile, heads on the road for a six-game trip starting Friday at Milwaukee. The Marlins will then visit Houston before returning home to face San Diego.
The sweep was a critical one for Cleveland, which entered the series two games below .500 and had lost five of its previous seven games. The Guardians now sit at 51-46, three games back of the first-place Minnesota Twins in the American League Central. Miami, despite the sweep, remains in second place in the National League East, four games behind the Atlanta Braves.
The Guardians’ victory was their fourth in a row after a 5-2 win Thursday at Minnesota and the two earlier wins in Miami. The Marlins had won four straight before the series started.
Cleveland’s offense came through with clutch hits in key moments. Rocchio’s homer in the fifth broke a 2-1 tie and gave the Guardians breathing room. Watson’s RBI single in the seventh came with two outs and extended the lead to 4-1. DeLauter’s blast in the ninth provided insurance that proved necessary when Conine homered in the bottom of the inning.
The Marlins’ pitching staff struggled to contain the Guardians’ lineup, which consistently put runners on base. Cleveland had at least one runner in every inning except the sixth and eighth, but stranded seven runners total.
Miami’s bullpen kept the game close after Phillips departed. Lake Bachar worked two innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits, while Cade Gibson pitched a scoreless sixth. But the Guardians’ bullpen matched them, holding the Marlins to just two runs over the final four innings.
The game was the rubber match of the series, but Cleveland had already secured the series win with victories in the first two games. The Guardians now look to build momentum as they head into a favorable stretch of games against sub-.500 opponents.
Miami will need to regroup quickly as it faces a tough road trip against the Brewers and Astros, both of whom are contending for playoff spots.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Miami 6, Cleveland 5, and its ELO system gave Miami a 52.30 percent probability to win. Cleveland entered as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5, and the total of seven runs went over the over-under line of eight.
