Wheeler shuts out Tigers as Phillies win 5‑0

DETROIT (Interstat) — Zack Wheeler pitched seven dominant innings and J.T. Realmuto delivered a bases-clearing double in a four-run sixth inning as the Philadelphia Phillies blanked the Detroit Tigers 5-0 on Sunday afternoon at Comerica Park.

Wheeler struck out 10 and allowed only two hits, lowering his season earned-run average while improving to 10-1. The right-hander walked two and faced just one batter above the minimum through seven frames. He retired 15 of the first 16 Tigers he faced, the lone blemish a second-inning single by Riley Greene that was immediately erased on a double play.

Tarik Skubal took the loss for Detroit, falling to 5-5. Skubal worked five innings, giving up four hits and two earned runs while striking out five. He left with his team trailing 1-0 after the Phillies scratched across a run in the third inning.

The game was scoreless until Philadelphia broke through in the top of the third. With one out, J.T. Realmuto was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a groundout by Bryson Stott. After Trea Turner lined out, Kyle Schwarber singled to left field, driving in Realmuto. Schwarber advanced to second on the throw but was stranded when Bryce Harper grounded out.

Wheeler continued to stifle the Tigers. Detroit’s only other hit came in the fifth inning when Zach McKinstry singled with two outs, but Matt Vierling flied out to end the threat.

The Phillies put the game out of reach in the sixth, sending nine batters to the plate and scoring four runs on four hits. Harper led off with a single, and Alec Bohm followed with a sharp single through the middle off reliever Keider Montero. Edmundo Sosa sacrificed both runners into scoring position, and Montero intentionally walked Brandon Marsh to load the bases. Derek Hill struck out for the second out, but Realmuto laced a double to left field that cleared the bases, scoring Harper, Bohm and Marsh. Realmuto advanced to third on a throwing error by shortstop Kevin McGonigle, then scored on a single by Stott, who was credited with an RBI after a replay challenge overturned the original out call at first base. Turner followed with a single, but Schwarber struck out to end the inning.

The Tigers put two runners on in the bottom of the sixth when McGonigle walked and Colt Keith walked with two outs, but Greene struck out swinging to end the inning. Detroit never threatened again, managing only a walk and a hit batsman over the final three innings.

Wheeler departed after the seventh, having thrown 105 pitches. Jonathan Bowlan pitched a perfect ninth to close out the shutout.

With the victory, Philadelphia improved to 54-43, while Detroit dropped to 44-52. The Phillies evened the three-game series at one win apiece after losing 10-2 on Friday and bouncing back with a 4-2 victory Saturday.

The most pivotal moment came in the sixth inning when Realmuto’s double turned a tense 1-0 lead into a 5-0 cushion. The rally began with Harper’s leadoff single and continued with Bohm’s hit and Sosa’s sacrifice. After the intentional walk and a strikeout, Realmuto cleared the bases and later scored on Stott’s ground ball, effectively deciding the outcome.

Defensively, the Phillies turned one double play and committed one error, a missed catch by Harper in the third inning that did not lead to any damage. Detroit’s defense also committed an error, McGonigle’s throwing miscue that allowed Realmuto to take third base.

Philadelphia outhit Detroit 9-2. The Phillies’ nine hits were spread across seven different players, with Schwarber leading the way with two singles. Realmuto had two hits, a double and a single, and drove in three runs. Stott also had two hits, including a double and a single. Trea Turner added a single and a walk, while Harper and Bohm each collected one hit.

For Detroit, Greene was the only batter with a hit, a first-inning single. McKinstry added the other hit, a fifth-inning single. The Tigers struck out 15 times as a team, with Wheeler accounting for 10 of those. Dillon Dingler, Colt Keith, Spencer Torkelson, James Outman, Matt Vierling and Kevin McGonigle each went hitless. Torkelson finished 0-for-3 with two strikeouts. McGonigle was 0-for-3 with a walk. Dingler was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. Kerry Carpenter was 0-for-2 with two strikeouts. Eduardo Valencia, pinch-hitting in the seventh, struck out in his only at-bat.

Reliever Beau Brieske pitched one-third of an inning for Detroit, striking out the only batter he faced.

Philadelphia had won four of its previous six games entering Sunday, while Detroit had lost three of its last four.

The series concludes as both teams head into the All-Star break. The Phillies will return home to host the New York Mets on Friday, July 17, followed by the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees. The Tigers travel to Los Angeles to face the Angels on the same date, then visit the Chicago Cubs before returning home to host the Kansas City Royals.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Detroit 7, Philadelphia 5. Interstat’s ELO system gave Philadelphia a 52.90 percent probability to win. The Phillies were installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total of five runs went over the over-under line of seven and a half.
