White Sox Rout Athletics 14‑1 Behind Peters, Vargas Homers

CHICAGO (Interstat) — The Chicago White Sox erupted for eight runs in the seventh inning and routed the Athletics 14-1 on Friday night at Guaranteed Rate Field, snapping a three-game losing streak and moving above .500 for the first time since late June.

Sean Burke pitched seven dominant innings, allowing only four hits and one earned run while striking out nine to improve to 6-4. Aaron Civale took the loss, falling to 5-7 after the Athletics’ bullpen was battered for 10 runs over the final three innings. The victory gave the White Sox a 48-45 record, while the Athletics fell to 41-53 with their seventh straight defeat.

The game was scoreless through four innings as Burke and Civale traded zeros. Burke retired the first six batters he faced, striking out three, and allowed only a two-out double to Tristan Peters in the third inning that went nowhere. Civale matched him, surrendering just a double to Miguel Vargas in the fourth before stranding him at third.

The White Sox broke through in the fifth. Chase Meidroth led off with a double, and Andrew Benintendi followed with an RBI double to make it 1-0. After Kyle Teel walked, Peters singled to right field to drive in Benintendi, and Sam Antonacci lined a single to right that scored Teel, making it 3-0. Vargas then lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Peters and extending the lead to 4-0.

The Athletics finally got on the board in the seventh. Tyler Soderstrom led off the inning with his 14th home run of the season, a solo shot to right field that cut the deficit to 4-1. Jacob Wilson followed with a single, but Burke struck out Joey Meneses to end the threat. That was the last batter Burke faced, and he exited after seven innings having thrown 98 pitches.

The eighth-run seventh inning turned the game into a rout. Kyle Teel walked to start the inning, and Peters crushed his sixth home run of the year to right-center field, scoring Teel and making it 6-1. Antonacci walked, and Munetaka Murakami doubled to right to drive in Antonacci, pushing the lead to 7-1. Vargas followed with a ground-rule double that plated Murakami, and after Colson Montgomery flied out, Braden Montgomery singled to put runners at the corners. Chase Meidroth walked to load the bases, and Benintendi cleared them with a double to left, scoring Vargas, Braden Montgomery and Meidroth to make it 11-1. Teel then lined out, but Peters tripled to right to score Benintendi, capping the inning at 12-1.

The White Sox added two more in the eighth. Vargas led off with his 21st home run, a solo shot to left. Colson Montgomery then singled and advanced to second on a fielding error by right fielder Lawrence Butler, and Chase Meidroth singled to center to drive in Montgomery for the final 14-1 margin.

Peters led the offensive onslaught, going 4 for 4 with a home run, a triple, a double and four runs batted in. Vargas finished 3 for 4 with a home run, two doubles and three RBIs. Benintendi had two doubles and four RBIs. For the Athletics, Jacob Wilson went 2 for 3 with two singles. Soderstrom’s home run was the visitors’ only extra-base hit.

The game drew an announced crowd of 37,539 and lasted 2 hours, 39 minutes.
