Braves rally past Pirates with grand slam in 9th
PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — The Atlanta Braves scored four runs in the ninth inning, propelled by Mike Yastrzemski’s grand slam, to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 10-5 on Thursday afternoon at PNC Park.
The victory gave Atlanta a 2-1 series win after the teams split the first two games. The Braves improved to 54-38, while the Pirates fell to 47-47.
Atlanta starter Dylan Dodd earned his second win without a loss, working five innings and allowing four runs on five hits with three strikeouts and three walks. Pittsburgh starter Mitch Keller took the loss, dropping to 6-7, after surrendering three runs on four hits over three innings.
The Braves took an early lead in the first inning when Matt Olson hit his 25th home run, a solo shot to right field. Atlanta added two runs in the third inning. Michael Harris II singled, and Ozzie Albies doubled him home. Albies later scored on a single by Mauricio Dubón, making it 3-0.
Pittsburgh answered in the bottom of the third. Bryan Reynolds led off with his 14th home run, and Esmerlyn Valdez followed with his seventh homer, cutting the lead to 3-2.
Atlanta expanded its advantage in the fourth inning. After Austin Riley struck out, Mike Yastrzemski walked and Jim Jarvis crushed his first major league home run, a two-run shot to right field. Jarvis’s homer made it 5-2. Later in the inning, Albies walked, Olson walked and Drake Baldwin singled to drive in Albies, giving Atlanta a 6-2 lead.
The Pirates chipped away again in the bottom of the fourth. After a catcher’s interference call put Jared Triolo on base, Jake Mangum hit his second home run, a two-run blast to right, pulling Pittsburgh within 6-4.
Mangum, who finished 4 for 5 with a double, a home run and three RBIs, continued to drive the offense. In the sixth inning, Nick Gonzales walked and moved to second on a single by Rafael Flores Jr. After Triolo grounded into a force out, Mangum doubled to right-center, scoring Gonzales and cutting the deficit to 6-5. But the Pirates left the tying run on base when Brandon Lowe popped out.
The score remained 6-5 through the seventh and eighth innings, with Atlanta’s bullpen and Pittsburgh relievers trading scoreless frames. Yohan Ramírez threw two shutout innings for the Pirates, striking out two. Hunter Stratton worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Gregory Soto also pitched a perfect inning.
In the top of the ninth, Olson drew a leadoff walk from Pirates reliever Dennis Santana. Baldwin singled, putting runners at first and second. Dubón sacrificed them to second and third, and Santana intentionally walked Dominic Smith to load the bases. Riley struck out for the second out, bringing Yastrzemski to the plate. Santana left a pitch over the plate, and Yastrzemski drove it over the right-field wall for his sixth home run and the Braves’ first grand slam of the season. The blast pushed the lead to 10-5.
Jarvis followed with a double, but Harris II lined out to end the inning. In the bottom of the ninth, closer Raisel Iglesias retired the Pirates in order, striking out two, to seal the win.
Olson finished with a home run, two walks and two runs scored. Jarvis had a home run, a double and two RBIs. For the Pirates, Reynolds and Valdez each homered. Mangum’s four hits led all batters.
The game took 3 hours 7 minutes in front of an announced crowd of 20,895.
