Orioles edge Cubs 3‑2 on Jackson’s double in eighth
BALTIMORE (Interstat) — Seiya Suzuki homered and doubled in two runs, but a two-run pinch-hit double by Jeremiah Jackson in the eighth inning lifted the Baltimore Orioles to a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Thursday night at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
Tyler Wells earned the win in relief for Baltimore, improving to 2-1 on the season. Tyler Ferguson, who allowed the go-ahead runs, took the loss, falling to 0-1. Andrew Kittredge recorded his second save of the year with a scoreless ninth inning.
The Cubs had won the first two games of the three-game series, outscoring the Orioles 14-9, but could not complete the sweep despite outhitting Baltimore 9-3. Chicago’s bullpen faltered in the decisive eighth inning after Suzuki’s go-ahead double had given the Cubs a 2-1 lead.
Baltimore struck first in the second inning. Tyler O’Neill led off with his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot to center field off Cubs starter David Peterson. The Orioles managed little else against Peterson, who allowed only two hits and one earned run over five innings, striking out two and walking three.
The Cubs tied the game in the sixth. Suzuki led off the inning by crushing a 1-1 pitch from Orioles starter Trevor Rogers over the left-field wall, his 15th home run of the season. Rogers had been effective to that point, permitting only four hits and the one run over six innings. He struck out four and walked one, leaving with the game tied 1-1.
Chicago threatened in the seventh but could not score. Ian Happ singled with one out, but Dansby Swanson and Miguel Amaya flied out to end the inning.
The Cubs finally broke the deadlock in the eighth. Pete Crow-Armstrong led off with a double off the right-field wall, which was deflected by O’Neill. After Alex Bregman flied out to center, advancing Crow-Armstrong to third, Suzuki doubled on a ground ball to left field, driving in Crow-Armstrong to give Chicago a 2-1 lead.
Baltimore answered immediately in the bottom of the eighth. Ferguson had relieved Gavin Hollowell, who had pitched a scoreless seventh and retired the first batter of the eighth. Ferguson then hit Gunnar Henderson and Pete Alonso consecutively to load the bases with one out. Jeremiah Jackson, pinch-hitting for Coby Mayo, lined a double to center field, scoring Henderson and Alonso to put the Orioles ahead 3-2. Jackson’s hit was his ninth double of the season and gave him two RBIs.
The Cubs mounted a final threat in the ninth. Facing Kittredge, Nico Hoerner reached on a fielding error by shortstop Gunnar Henderson. Ian Happ singled to put runners at first and second with no outs. But Dansby Swanson grounded into a force out at second base, and Michael Conforto lined out to left field to end the game.
The Cubs’ bullpen combined for 3 2/3 innings of relief, with Hollowell striking out one in 1 1/3 hitless innings. Caleb Thielbar struck out one in two-thirds of an inning, and Ryan Rolison allowed one hit in two-thirds of an inning. Baltimore’s bullpen was sharp as well. Yennier Cano allowed one hit in a scoreless seventh inning, and Kittredge worked around a hit and an error in the ninth.
Suzuki finished 3 for 4 with a home run, a double and two RBIs. Crow-Armstrong had a double and scored a run. Hoerner also doubled for the Cubs, who had 10 hits in the game but left eight runners on base.
For the Orioles, O’Neill went 1 for 3 with a home run. Taylor Ward had a single, and Henderson and Alonso each were hit by pitches. Baltimore managed only three hits but made them count, scoring three runs on a home run and a double.
The game took 2 hours, 31 minutes and was played before an announced crowd of 12,052.
Chicago’s record fell to 52-41, while Baltimore improved to 43-51.
The Cubs next travel to Cincinnati for a three-game series starting Friday. The Orioles return home to host the Kansas City Royals for a three-game set beginning Friday.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Chicago Cubs 7, Baltimore Orioles 4. Interstat’s ELO system gave the Cubs a 55.30 percent probability to win. Baltimore was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of 5 went over the over-under line of 9.5.
