Red Sox shut out White Sox behind Bennett’s gem
CHICAGO (Interstat) — Jake Bennett allowed four hits over six scoreless innings and the Boston Red Sox defeated the Chicago White Sox 5-0 on Wednesday night at Guaranteed Rate Field, extending their winning streak to five games while handing Chicago its second straight shutout loss.
Bennett, a left-hander who improved to 4-3, struck out four and walked one in his second consecutive quality start. He scattered singles in the second, third and fifth innings and benefitted from two double plays turned by the Boston defense. The Red Sox offense provided all the support he needed with a three-run third inning and a two-run fourth against White Sox starter Davis Martin.
Martin, who entered with a 9-2 record and a 3.41 ERA, lasted only four innings and was charged with five earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts and two walks. The right-hander fell to 9-3 and saw his ERA rise to 3.80.
The game remained scoreless through two innings as both starters worked efficiently. Boston threatened in the top of the first when Anthony Seigler flew out to right and Ceddanne Rafaela lined out to left, but Wilyer Abreu struck out on a foul tip to end the inning. Chicago’s first inning was similarly quiet: Miguel Vargas lined out to third, Randal Grichuk flew out to right and Colson Montgomery struck out on a foul tip.
In the bottom of the second, the White Sox put together their best scoring opportunity. Chase Meidroth lined a sharp single to left, and Sam Antonacci walked to put runners on first and second with one out. But Braden Montgomery struck out swinging, and Junior Perez was called out on strikes. Kyle Teel then grounded out softly to end the threat.
The Red Sox broke through in the third. Jarren Duran led off with a walk, and Carlos Narváez sacrificed him to second. Tsung-Che Cheng followed with a sharp line-drive single to center that scored Duran, with Cheng advancing to second on the throw. Anthony Seigler walked to put runners on first and second, and Ceddanne Rafaela drove a double to deep center, scoring Cheng and moving Seigler to third. Wilyer Abreu grounded out to first, then Willson Contreras hit a sacrifice fly to center that plated Seigler, giving Boston a 3-0 lead.
The Red Sox added two more runs in the fourth. Masataka Yoshida singled to right, and Caleb Durbin singled to center. After Duran struck out swinging, Narváez singled to right, scoring Yoshida and moving Durbin to third. Cheng then singled to right, bringing home Durbin and sending Narváez to second. Andruw Monasterio forced Cheng out at second on a grounder to third, but the damage was done, and Boston led 5-0.
From there, Bennett and the Boston bullpen kept the White Sox off the board. Bennett worked around a single by Luisangel Acuña in the third and a single by Antonacci in the fourth. Antonacci was erased on a double play. Bennett retired the side in order in the fifth and sixth before departing after 80 pitches.
Boston’s relievers closed the door. Chris Murphy pitched a perfect seventh, striking out two. Bryan Hudson struck out two in a scoreless eighth, and Trevor Richards worked a clean ninth, allowing three hits but no runs while striking out four. Richards, who entered in the eighth, pitched two innings and struck out four to seal the shutout.
For the White Sox, the offensive struggles continued. After scoring only one run in Tuesday’s 8-1 loss to Boston, Chicago managed just four hits Wednesday. Acuña went 2 for 2 with two singles, the only Chicago batter with multiple hits. Antonacci went 1 for 2 with a walk, and Meidroth went 1 for 4. Grichuk was 0 for 4, Teel was 0 for 3, Montgomery was 0 for 4, and Perez was 0 for 3. The White Sox struck out 11 times and left six runners on base.
Boston’s offense collected 10 hits. Rafaela had a double and a single, and Cheng had two singles and a walk. Narváez singled and drove in a run, and Yoshida, Durbin, and Romy Gonzalez each had a hit. Seigler walked twice.
The game lasted 2 hours 39 minutes in front of an announced crowd of 23,973. The win lifted Boston’s record to 42-48, while Chicago fell to 47-44.
The Red Sox will go for the series sweep Thursday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field before traveling to New York for a three-game weekend set against the Mets. The White Sox return home Friday to begin a three-game series against the Athletics.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Boston 7, Chicago 6. Interstat’s ELO system gave Boston a 52.90 percent probability to win. The White Sox had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The combined total of five runs went over the over-under line of eight.
