Rays shut out Yankees 3‑0 behind McClanahan’s strong start

TAMPA, Fla. (Interstat) — Shane McClanahan pitched 6 1/3 shutout innings, Jonathan Aranda drove in all three runs and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the New York Yankees 3-0 on Wednesday night at George Steinbrenner Field, securing a series win before a crowd of 19,373.

McClanahan, who improved to 8-5, allowed four hits, struck out five and walked none in a duel with Yankees ace Gerrit Cole. The left-hander retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced and allowed only one runner past second base before exiting after throwing a called third strike past Paul Goldschmidt to end the top of the seventh. Cole, making his sixth start of the season, took the loss and fell to 2-4 after allowing three earned runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings while striking out six.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third, when Aranda delivered the first blow. Yandy Díaz led off with a double to left-center, his 16th of the season, and Aranda followed with a line-drive single to right that scored Díaz. Aranda advanced to second on the throw home and later moved to third on a groundout by Junior Caminero, but the Rays could not add more when Cedric Mullins popped out.

Tampa Bay extended its lead in the fifth after Nick Fortes singled to center with one out. Díaz then lined a single to center, and Aranda crushed a sharp fly ball to deep center for a double, his 14th, scoring Fortes and sending Díaz to third. Caminero followed with a fielder’s choice grounder that forced Díaz out at the plate, but the threat ended with Aranda stranded at third when Mullins struck out.

The Rays added an insurance run in the seventh. Taylor Walls drew a walk to start the inning, and after Fortes struck out, Díaz singled to right, sending Walls to third. Aranda then lifted a sacrifice fly to center fielder Trent Grisham, scoring Walls and making it 3-0. Caminero struck out to end the inning.

Cole, who had matched McClanahan through the early frames, was lifted after 6 1/3 innings having thrown 100 pitches. New York mustered only six hits and never advanced a runner past second base after the second inning. In the second, Jasson Domínguez singled and Anthony Volpe singled, putting runners on first and third with one out. But Max Schuemann grounded into a fielder’s choice that cut down Domínguez at the plate, and Austin Wells popped out.

The Yankees had another chance in the seventh. Amed Rosario singled, and Domínguez followed with a single that put runners on first and second with one out. But Volpe struck out and Grisham flied out to left to end the inning.

Bryan Baker earned his 25th save by pitching a perfect ninth inning, striking out three of the four batters he faced after retiring the side in order in the eighth. Cole Sulser worked 1 2/3 scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out three, while Fernando Cruz and Angel Chivilli each threw scoreless innings for the Yankees.

Yandy Díaz went 4 for 4 for Tampa Bay, raising his average to .312. Aranda finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs. For the Yankees, Domínguez and Volpe each had two hits, but the team went 0 for 5 with runners in scoring position and left four men on base.

The victory improved the Rays to 54-36, best in the American League East, while the Yankees fell to 50-42. Tampa Bay has now won two of three in the series heading into Thursday’s finale. The Yankees will travel to Washington for a three-game set beginning Friday, while the Rays host Seattle in a weekend series starting Friday.

Bryan Baker struck out three in the ninth, including Cody Bellinger and Jasson Domínguez swinging to end the game. The total time of game was 2 hours, 19 minutes.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Tampa Bay 7, New York 2, and its ELO system had given the Yankees a 50.70 percent probability to win. Tampa Bay had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5, and the total score of three runs went under the over/under line of seven.
