Marlins blank Mariners 2‑0 behind Phillips, Fairbanks
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Interstat) — Tyler Phillips pitched five shutout innings and Xavier Edwards drove in a run as the Miami Marlins blanked the Seattle Mariners 2-0 on Wednesday at loanDepot Park before a crowd of 10,545.
The Marlins improved to 51-42 with their second consecutive win over Seattle, following a 6-5, 10-inning victory Tuesday. The Mariners fell to 47-46.
The game lasted 2 hours, 16 minutes.
Phillips scattered four hits, struck out three and walked none to earn his second win against three losses. He lowered his ERA to 3.72 with the efficient outing, facing three batters over the minimum through five innings. George Kirby took the loss for Seattle, allowing two runs on eight hits over six innings while striking out six and walking none. Kirby dropped to 7-8 with a 3.89 ERA.
Miami struck first in the bottom of the second. Kyle Stowers led off with a home run to center field, his 12th of the season, depositing a 1-0 fastball from Kirby over the wall. The solo shot gave the Marlins a 1-0 lead. Griffin Conine followed with a single, but Kirby retired the next three batters—Heriberto Hernández swinging, Jakob Marsee on a flyout and Joe Mack on a called third strike.
The Marlins added an insurance run in the third. Javier Sanoja opened the inning with a double to center, his 17th two-base hit of the year. Liam Hicks then flied to right, and Luke Raley’s throw doubled off Sanoja trying to advance to third. Otto Lopez followed with a single that deflected off Kirby’s glove to shortstop Colt Emerson. Edwards then lined a triple to right field, scoring Lopez easily. Edwards later scored on the play? No, the triple scored Lopez. The inning ended when Stowers struck out swinging, leaving Edwards at third.
Edwards finished 2 for 4 with the triple and the RBI. Lopez went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored. Sanoja added a single for a 1-for-3 day. Hernandez doubled in the fourth but was erased on a fielder’s choice when Marsee grounded to shortstop Emerson, who tagged Hernandez trying to reach third.
Seattle’s offense never threatened. The Mariners managed only five hits, all singles, and left six runners on base. They put two men on in the first when Dominic Canzone singled and Cal Raleigh singled, moving Canzone to third, but Josh Naylor grounded out to first to end the inning.
In the second, Luke Raley singled on a bunt, but Cole Young grounded into a double play. Victor Robles was hit by a pitch and Colt Emerson reached on a forceout to end the frame.
Seattle’s best chance came in the fourth. Naylor walked and stole third, his 16th steal of the year, after Robles walked to put runners at the corners with one out. But Emerson grounded into a forceout at second, Robles erased, and the inning died. The Mariners never got a runner past second base thereafter.
Pete Fairbanks worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his 13th save, allowing one hit and striking out two. Cade Gibson contributed two perfect innings of relief, striking out three.
For Seattle, Kirby held Miami to two runs despite allowing eight hits. The Mariners’ bullpen—Nick Davila pitched a scoreless seventh—kept the deficit at two.
The game featured only one walk, issued by Phillips to Naylor in the fourth. No Mariner reached third base after the fourth inning.
